UDP has killed my car

UDP has killed my car
My car has been in the shop for the past three days because of this UDP issue I have been having. To refresh your memory, here are my symptoms:
1. Takes multiple turns of the key to start.
2. Check engine light is on- code is "Crank Position Sensor".
Anyhow, I paid $100 to have the crank position sensor replaced and I am still experiencing the same problems. I am pretty ****ed off right now and am ready to run my car through a wall.
I have been recommended to put the stock pulley back on and go from there. Any suggestions?

Maybe someone has a manual, I thought the crank posotion sensor was mounted by and read the flywheel at the other end of the motor. I could be wrong. But if it is the ballancer/pullies wouldn't have anything to do with this. Where is the sensor located?

This may be alot of work but...Take off the UDP and unscrew the timing ring on the back of the UDP. Overlay it on the stock pulley. All the tabs should line up exactly, none should be bent out of plane or broken, and all should be same length. Next lay both pulleys on their face and compare the relative heights of the timing rings, they should be the same. If everything lines up, then it's not the pulley. If the sensor was replaced, then that should be good too. Next thing to check is wiring between the sensor and ECU, but I'm not sure how to check that.
BTW, there are 2 crankshaft position sensors, one by the flywheel (POS) and one by the crank pulley (REF).

There are two differnt crank POS sensors, one is located on the bell housing of the transmision and the other is just below the UDP. NOw which one of these sensors was replaced? A simple volt meter test can tell you if the sensor is good or not, theresno need to start throwing money around. I am willing to bet that the crank POS sensor right below the UDP is either unpluged or the wires leading to it have been damaged. If I am wrong then put the oem crank pulley back on and take the car into the dealer for waranty work. BTW who installed the pulley and when did you first see the check engine light?

Okay, here's the deal.
The car started this the minute the UDP was installed. I have a strange feeling that i was given the wrong UDP by the shop I went to. He deals with Altimas mainly and I think that might be the problem.
It was installed professionally and the shop is completely baffled. And now I am the proud owner of a perfectly functional crank pulley sensor if anybody needs one.

I'd bet you have the wrong pulley.

It cannot be installed improperly. It is physically a part of the udp and the udp can only go on one way - so there is no way for the timing ring to cause a problem unless it is defective from the factory.

I'm sorry for your experience asu174. Sounds like a real pain.
Don't let this thread scare anybody away from the UDP though. The correct and properly installed UDP is not going to "kill" your car. asu174 may have had the wrong UDP or the shop may have done some damage during the installation...but a UDP itself poses no danger to your car.

i had mine installed and i kept getting a popping noise when the a/c was turned on. it was going even when the a/c was off but real bad when it came on. i had someone loosen the tensioner, it got worse so he tightened it down even further and now the noise is gone and im trouble free at least for now.

Wow..that sucks dude. I think the most important thing is that if you put the stock pulley back on, or a different one if you got the wrong one, that the problems go away!! Hopefully you just got the wrong one and you can try another.

If you have one for the 2K2 Maxima/Altima, then it doesn't have the timing rings. This may be your problem.
Otherwise, a damaged UDP or wiring sounds likely.
Also, IMHO, if you paid a shop to do it then you should not be throwing money at the problem, they should.
