On older cars, retarding your ignition a lot may cause somethign like that..but if that dost help, put a spark plug and plug it in the ***, fire it up see if helps. MWahahaha I just cant keep myself from laughin Tanmann-no offense, but why in the hell would you want flames coming out from your exhaust?

Yeah, I was just watching the WRC (rally) on TV and those pugeot's and WRX's were spitting flames while shifting...but not all the time. I think if you're running rich, like in a race car, and you have basically open headers, it's a lot easier to get that good ol flame!
However, I can't see the purpose of having your maxima do this...unless you want to get pulled over real quick...or melt your bumper.

It's called an ALS (Anti-Lag System). During a gear shift, the ECU will retard the ignition timing so that combustion occurs when the exhaust valve is open and the hot gasses will help keep the turbo spooled. Of course, the flames aren't exactly good for the turbo. WRC cars can afford to do this because they get rebuilt frequently.
