brake grinding sound?

Once in a while there's a loud grinding noise when i apply the brake during low speed. Usually the first brake of the day, then after that the brake is totally smooth. Its not the sharp sound that we usually hear, but sounds kinda like the noise when we apply the brake after a car wash, but with a "rough" feeling. It felt like the pad is grinding on a rough surface and the brake padel shakes a little. I have a 2k2 and i think my pads are still pretty new (8k miles). It happens to my brother's 2k as well. sorry for the bad description. Any ideas?

The rotor oxidizes a bit when it is just sitting there so if you hear that noise when you first apply the brakes in the morning or something, it's no big deal.

Re: brake grinding sound?

i think that happens to me from time to time as well. is it like a gurgling sound? problem is, i don't think it's oxidation because it seems to happen more when the brakes are warm. does your car vibrate like it would from bad rotors?

maybe it's the small layer of metal (can't recall the name of it) letting you know it's getting close to changing the pad.

I get that grinding also. I had it with my stock pads and also with my aftermarket pads. I usually get the grinding after the rotors have warmed up a bit. I just shrug it off as one of Nissan quality features.

do you guys park outside? is makes sense if you do. Your rotors do get oxidation (rust) on them overnight and it takes a couple of brakings to shave it off

grinding sound

i am not sure if its oxidation, i get it when it is warm too.
and the shaking the maximas are notorious for, the rotors get warped easily. i had to get mine turned and that fixed the shaking. so if it shakes go get ur rotors turned and change ur brake pads as well, they will be unevenly worn and maybe baked, which might also cause the grinding noise at slow speeds.
my 2 cents

Ditto...I get it EVERY morning for about 2 min, then its always gone...brand new pads and rotors here 500 miles ago also...If it doesnt go away, there might be something amiss...You shouldnt "hear" anything, pretty much...

I get it all the time too.. Just turn up the Bose.. I muffle out the windnoise too with it. And thank got I'm not experiencing any rattling problems.. or else I'd just be replacing one annoying sound with another

nope, stock pads.

how come i never experience this in my 96?

don't think my rotors are bad, i don't get any vibration during braking.

maybe it's the small layer of metal (can't recall the name of it) letting you know it's getting close to changing the pad.
don't think so, as the dealer checked for me few weeks ago the pads still have 70-80% on them.

always parked in the garage

well, thanks for the comments guys. But i dunno, i really dont' think it's oxidation. Funny thing is that it only start to happen after i got the transversal link recall done. so i was thinking maybe the dealer didn't put somthing back right? or maybe its got somthing to do with the brake fluids as it settles over the night??
