Service Engine Soon

2002 SE with no Mods. I have 11,000 miles. We filled up with gas 36 hours ago, while coming home tonight the CEL comes on. We're going to try to stop by Autozone or a Nissan dealer tomorrow (Labor Day).

I know AutoZone checks computers now, but can the check OBD-II?

What are some things to check (like gas cap) before I take it to the dealer? We're 400 miles from home so I'd like to get this checked out before hitting the road. Thanks!

make sure your gas cap is tight, at least 3 clicks after filling up. try taking off the negative cable for a few minutes and if its still there, time for the dealer!

For sure check the gas cap, as mentioned and then the battery cable thing. I'm assuming your engine light is 'brightly' lite? Then get it checked if the above things don't take care of it. If it is dim, like mine has been since I got my Max, it is most likely a defective instrument cluster, and the engine is ok. Man, this problem sure is a pain in the a**. Hope you get it resolved before your trip home...

Thanks guys. Well, I made sure the gas cap was tight then took it to Autozone...not once but THREE times.

1)No codes found. AutoZone rep cleared codes.

I went back to where I was staying (20 miles) with no CEL showing. After packing the car I started it and guess what...CEL!

2)No codes found. AutoZone rep cleared codes.

At this point I figured it was bad gas (filled up with Sunoco 94 the night before). We got 200 miles home (400 total) and the CEL came on again. We then stopped at the local AutoZone.

3)Codes found:

0139-- Oxygen sensor
1147-- Nissan Specific. Unknown. Anyone know what this one is?

P0139 - Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Damaged - (after 3 way cat) the O2 sensor that monitors the exhaust gas

P1147 - same thing... just seems to be a nissan specific code for the same sensor

My recommmendations - visit dealer for replacement

Thanks!

I'd like to also point out that this all happened AFTER I filled up with Sunoco 94. I have been running Hess/Amoco 93 for the past year almost exclusively with no problems. Filled up with Sunoco 94 and within 24 hours, this happens. Anyone else have a problem with Sunoco gas? I'm not saying its the problem, but it was the only thing during the trip that was out of the ordinary.

Just filled up with Sunoco 94 and the engine is purring very nicely. This is also not the first time. I bet you have a defective O2 sensor, or maybe it was damaged by road debris.
