RPM specific vibration

I have a 2k2 SE auto with 5k miles. Between 1750-1900 RPM I feel a buzzing sensation in the gas pedal and in the steering wheel. Also, when the buzzing occurs, I notice that the exhaust note changes and kind of makes a buzzing sort of noise. I have taken it to the dealer 2 times and they told me that the technician couldn't feel any vibration. This vibration also is felt with the car in park if I hold the RPM's steady at 1750. I hate wasting my time bringing it to the dealer and was hoping that maybe I could fix it myself. Has any else had this problem?

maybe motor mounts

A buzzing at a specific RPM would be more likely to be an issue with motor mounts. I could see hearing this or feeling it through the car (the steering wheel and gas pedal are good contact points, but I would imagine that holding onto anything should show it). This is something they should easily be able to check (presuming that its easy to view the motor mounts on the VQ35 engines.

Hey Han,

It happens in my car too (goes away if I speed up or slow down) as well as a bunch of others in the group. I'm not sure if I've ever heard of someone sucessfully getting Nissan to fix it though.

Sorry I can't be more help, but you're not alone.

I have an Auto 2002 SE

Thanks for replying Tom. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with the problem. It's not a major problem, it's just very annoying. I've done some searched on the forum and I haven't heard of anyone getting this fixed either. The weird thing is that I don't think it did this when I bought it. Tom, does your vibration seem to lessen on certain roads? This might sound weird but the vibration lessens greatly on some roads, and on other roads (typically ones with slight inclines) it increases. Go figure....

I know the answer to this one, I had the same type Problem on my 1997 Maxima. I know its a different model/year, The guys at the Dealership looked at it because I was baffled. What they found was that a heat shield had come down over the top of the Exhaust and would vibrate throughout the car. I suggest if you can put the car up on ramps and take a look, if not bring it to the dealership and let them know.

I have a 6spd 2k2 and I notice the same thing from about 1700-2000 rpms. My brother had a 91 Prelude that used to make that type of noise at a low rpm and it was his heat shield. I think that is what this has to be as well. There just must be some type of resonance that occurs at that rpm.

No he never did get it fixed. Once he had it diagnosed and understood what it was, he just lived with it.

I'll probably just live with mine the way it is also. Not really because I want to but probably because I will never be able to get the dealer to acknowledge the problem and then fix it. Have you taken your 2k2 to the dealer to have them look at it?

No I haven't taken mine in for it. I probably won't as it doesn't seem to be causing any problems that I can tell. Also, I just keep the revs above 2k and everything is fine

I also have this vibration when the RPM is 1750-1900. I have 6K miles on a 2002 GLE Auto. It certainly does seem like a resonance issue. One more thing is I only noticed this after I put in synthetic transmission fluid. I would suspect maybe the Nissan ATF fluid "dampened" the vibration causing frequency.

Interesting note on this. I had the vibration when my oil level was half way between "H" and "L" After my last oil change, I added 4.5 qts, enough to put the level at the "H" line. The vibration/noise is not near as noticeable now. I wonder if oil level has anything to do with this???

I get my oil changed at the dealer and I've noticed that they put in 4.0 quarts of Mobil 5W30, when the owners manual says that the engine holds 4.5. The last time I changed my oil I think it was somewhere between the L and the H, just like yours was. The next time you change your oil, try putting in only 4.0 and if the vibration comes back then you may be right.
