I think all car washes leave swirl marks. If your able to wash it on your own you have more control over what you use to wash the car. I never use a towel (even 100% cotton or terry cloth) to dry the car. I use a leaf blower to dry it off. I have some swirls on the spoiler, but the next waxing takes them out. One thing to make sure of if you use a blower is to run it for a few minutes prior to using it to make sure it doesn't spew crap all over the paint.. Good luck!

The darker the color the more visible swirl marks are. If it was machine-buffed with a wool pad that's where they came from. I used to use a foam pad and 3M Finesse-it to remove these. A real detail shop should be able to take care of them for you.

So anytime you wax a dark car with an orbital you get swirls? Damn, I've always had a white car until now and I was just about to wax this weekend. New terry bonnets, craftsman orbital, all that. Won't work out?

A random orbit sander/polisher like Porter-Cable 7336 is a better choice than a rotary. You can pick one up at Lowe's for $109. As for the swirls in the original post, I bet the shop used a glaze like 3M IHG or Meguiar's #7 to hide the swirls instead of removing them. The problem is, those glazes are water-soluble and disappear with the first wash. Playero, you need to find a good detailer that will go through the right process for swirl removal, then charge it to the shop. Good luck!

Orbitals are fine. I was referring to the heavy swirl marks that come from a body shop machine polishing a car with an old wool pad on a high speed buffer, or those old POS automatic car washes with brushes that my dealership trashed my paint with.
