Started car after 3 weeks, rattled like 10 rattle snakes in a steel can??
SubscribeI have not driven my maxima for 3 weeks, started it yesterday and it rattled for about 3-4 minutes. The engine shaked for the first 30 sec or so. I started it this morning and it was fine. I use synthetic mobil one. It has rattled for a second or two several times when parked on an incline for an extended amount of time. No idea why it would do this.
I also started my 86 Ford pickup that has been sitting for 1.5 years and it made no noise whatsoever. I also regularly let my 89 Mustang GT sit for a month or more and it does not fuss when I start it. I guess I am going to have to start my maxima every other day even if I do not plan on driving it.

I get the same thing in my 99 now and then. Yesterday I started my car and only moved it back a few feet. Then 20 min later started it again and moved it back up. Both times it started as always, nice and quiet. Now this morning I get in it, turn the key, engine starts and sounds as if it's been sitting for a year. Rattling, clanking noise, a misfire, engine shaking for the first 10 or 15 seconds it was running. I'm like WTF?
This has happened a few times in the past. I'm using Amsoil oil & filters.

The same thing happened to me once in my 2K. I started it and moved the car a few feet and then it sat for about 24 hours. When I started it the next day the engine was knocking for about 10 seconds! I haven't had this happen again. By the way this happened when the car had about 15K or less on it.Originally posted by njmaxseltd

This topic has been covered before but it has been a while since anyone has brought it up. It turns out that this might have something to do with starting your engine when it is cold and only letting it run for a short time. Someone posted in the past what the exact culprit was but I can't remember what it was. I believe a conclusion was reached that when you start your car ALWAYS wait for the RPM's to drop to about 1,100 before shifting out of Park. Then, if you have to move your car just a few feet, your engine should be a little more warm than when you... start it- slam it into Drive-move the car- shut down the engine.
