I'm pretty sure a 320 can take an I30 the 320 has MB smooth shifting better geared 5spd auto/man transmission plus it's RWD. The I30 has more interior space and is cheaper but the C320 would be the better long term buy for you. I say buy the 320 the resale value is much better.
Based on the stats in http://www.car-stats.com, the MB performs better. Couple of co-workers have 2001 C240s (smaller V6 engine but basically the same car) and the handling is SWEEET! The auto tranny is one of the best I have felt (no hunting for gears with smooth, firm shifts).

I would say try the BMW 330ci. puts both cars to shame.

Back seat's too cramped in both the MBC320 and BMW 330. If you don't need a back seat, you can find better performance in a lot of coupes. If you need a sedan, consider Acura TL-S and Infiniti G-35, which both have more rear seat room and better performance than the MB C320.

I would agree with you on the G35 being as strong as it is.
the thing is, if yo want to save some bills and still get the
performance you want. you can do One of two things. Buy the
g35 and wait until the skyline mods come from japan. the g35
will be the platform for the next skyline. Or you can call
motorex and order a skyline from them. it will not be new, but
it will be fargan fast. and performance will be the greatest.
