I believe that it is a Genie that you need. I would also go with the Screw Driven. The are quieter. When you go to get one, just make sure it is compatible with HomeLink.

Also make sure it has the "rolling code" feature. I'm pretty sure all new ones do anyways, but just doublecheck.

How do you program the homelink with a rolling code? Do you need the base unit?

Forget screw drive or chain drive, the quietest is belt drive, all the premium garage door openers use them including craftsman, genie and stanley. The belt is a reinforced rubber similar to a timing belt anshould last a lifetime. I have 2 of them and my bedroom is above one. The only thing I hear is a slight hum of the motor, and if I wanted to, I could eliminate that motor noise by mounting the motor on rubber isolators.
Rolling codes are easy to program, there is a "program" button on the main unit of the opener and that will "teach" your homelink the code.

I programmed my garage door opener by pressing the garage remote and aiming it at my visor while holding down the homelink button. I never had to worry about doing anything to the base unit.

jjames, is yours a rolling code? All the rolling codes I had to do (about 8) has invovled using the base unit. Only my gate used the remote, but that is the dip switch technology.

If you have a 02 your Homelink will work with rolling codes. My 97 would not.

I better look for my base unit. I hope it has some program code on it.

I'm not sure if it's a rolling code or not. I think the garage door opener is pretty old though. (10 years or so).

Is this how you might open the gate to a gated community? Has anyone tried this?

If the gate for your community is the old style, not rolling code, you can just use the remote opener, if it uses a rolling code, you have to get with the maintence guy and see if he can help you. If the gate electronics is like the home version rolling code, there is a "program" button on the brains unit, you have to press that button and have the Maxima close to it and then you hold down the homey link button, it should learn the code from there.

I'm fairly certain that using your gated community remote will let you program your Homelink.

I'm also fairly certain that a gated community cannot use rolling codes. Think about it. You're out of the area, someone rolls up, opens the gate. The gate and that person's remote would roll codes. You come home, try to open the gate, but your remote no longer has the right code.

My mother in law has a 99 Accord EX with Homelink ... I programmed hers to open her community's gate, and her rolling code garage. Got burned by the continuation of directions for the rolling code the first time I tried ;-)

If that was the case, then wouldn't people with rolling code garage door openers with multiple remotes have the same problem...?

Our garage door opener is rolling code with two external remotes synced to it and 3 homelink transmitters. No problems...even when I'm across the state and come home for the weekend.

When we were having our house built, we were living in a gated apartment complex with a rolling code front gate and rolling code garage doors (stanley's).

Good point. I wonder if the base remembers the code for each remote, or just what the process is.

I'll have to look around and find out how they really work.
