Depends I have the same car N/A thou. But my friends have the 20v engines and those things kick big time gorilla *****. A supercharged 4AG from the MR2 is pretty kick a$$ but I dont like it. But the best one so far is the turbo MR2 megine in the 86 that is **** fast and fun. So what type of engine is your friend running? I think that you would have a chance unless he has the sr20det swap or the 2jz swap.
Just my opinions thou. Go for it and let us know.

Initial D rules!
They don't need many horses to go fast, they are an extremely light car. Don't race him hes got Tofu Powers! Takumi will kick your butt!

I have a '85 GTS with the 4A-GE with 380,000+ km and compression all over the place and the car is stil sweet. Now, the 4A-GE is supposed to be able to produce 200 bhp w/ boltons w/o turbo or SC. From whta I heard was that Toyota brought this engine from formula 3.I think the car ways about 2200 lb (night be wrong). I can see this car be quick. It would be interesting to see a race.
