Resetting "service engine soon" light....

so yeah, there's a rule i didn't know about....when the gauge cluster is removed and DISCONNECTED, DO NOT, and i mean, DO NOT turn on the car....because if you do, and you connect it all back up, you will get the service engine soon light.
or at least i think that's what caused it...pretty much during the alarm wire up, the car was turned on while the cluster was off and then on the paper it said "do no turn on vehicle while gauge cluster is disconnected"
i've been driving it like that and the car is fine, no problems. i did the overnite thing and it still didn't shut off. does anyone know what removing the gauge cluster triggered. or has anyone done this and found a way to reset it.
also, i do recall somebody mentioning that pep boys?? will reset the light for you? someone please verify. i guess any help/advice/opinions would help?

and yes, i did search, so i do know that resetting is done only through the scanner, i was just hoping someone could just tell me what was triggered by removing the cluster.
thanx guys...peace...

engine light

i dont know about pep boys, but autozone will plug up the scanner to your car and test to see what the problem is.......to "reset" the service engine light all you have to do is disconnect the battery terminals for atleast an hour.

i disconnected the ground off the battery from exactly 10:30AM till 7PM today (was at work and no one touched the car), came back and turned her on, light came on. do i have to disconnect both cause that makes no sense...as long as one is off, no power is transferred.

I know on my old Dodge Avenger, I've had to disconnect the battery, then put something on the brake so as to use any juice left over in any capacitors on the brake lights. After about an hour of that, the car is dead, dead, dead. This also had the effect of completely blowing down the ECU's memory, and allowed me to "retrain" it.
