Some Question from a possible Maxima Owner

Hello everyone. I am looking at purchasing a 2000 Maxima SE, it is at a dealership in Milwaukee, WI. Car has 42000 miles on it and the dealership has it priced at $18,995. Everything appears mechanically sound, but the car does have a pull to the right, when looking at the car I noticed the tires are rather worn and I believe this to be the cause of that problem. The interior looks kinda worn, the car was a buisness lease, I'm guessing used by some companies employee. Anyways some questions.

1. What do I need to be looking for? Are there any know issues with this year car?

2. Does the above price seem reasonable to you? If not what does sound reasonable.

3. What are the specs on this car? Is there a site that lists them? Maybe this site?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated..

some of the major issues are warping rotors which tend to warp regardless of how the car has been driven. the paint is another major issue as some problems with chipping have occured. i think you should be able to negotiate a better price than that considering the mileage, the worn tires and the newer 2k2-2k3 models. i have seen some people announce they got their brand new 2k2 for low 20s. there are a few other TSB out for that year but those are most likely the major issues. i could probably come up with a few more, i just need time. but id either get a better price or look elsewhere going on the description you have. oh yeah, if its auto then there have been problems with slippage but you didnt meantion the transmission so im not sure. looking at that small list is enough to scare some or most people away but i truly enjoy mine.

It is an automatic, it comes with the balance of the manufactures warranty with is 60000 miles and it is a certified car so it has a 10 100000 mile powertrain warranty as well.

I was thinking of offering them around 16,500 and work from there.

sounds like a good plan to me. the less you spend on the car the more you can spend modding the car. id see what they can do about the tires because you dont want to have to drop anywhere from 600-1100 on tires from the get go. oh yeah, if the tires are bridgestone potenzas RE92, then be very careful in the rain.

Yes I definetly want the tire situation taken care of and the pulling problem if not caused by the tires.

try: www.kbb.com
www.edmunds.com

Edmunds only shows a dealer retail price of around $14K for this type of car.

Besides the tire problem, I think the car is overpriced. You should difinitely get them down. I posted the same type of questions before I bought my Max three weeks ago and this forum was a big help. I bought a black 00 Max with every option including leather. It had 15k miles and the dealer had it listed at 20999. I paid 18k. Just tell them you found similar cars at other dealerships with less miles for cheaper and that you are looking at 2k2's with 15k miles for 21k. Then the bargaining begins. I also got a 100k mile warranty which I highly recommend if you are planning to keep the car. The low mileage was a good selling point for the dealership but the 3 year 36k bumper to bumper was over next March. That was my bargaining tool to get the price down. I am not so concerned with the engine but if something goes wrong with sunroof, windows, etc, etc. thats 60-70 dollars an hour labor. Just my .02
