I ran an Alero today at the track and she was able to get a 15.910 at 86.08 mph. She was moded also.

I raced a modded Alero V6 at the track by my house and he got a 16.6 so unless you cannot launch at all, you should have no trouble with him.

It depends on the driver of the alero I guess. I've heard 15s but I say a 16.6.

Blow the doors off that POS. The 3.1s and 3.4s were massed produced, low cost motors that have been shoehorned into everything from Corsica's to Camaro's. Its what you call a cost cutter for Chevy. Mass produced brittle pistons and powder metal rods. Blow the doors off that piece of garbage and teach that guy a lesson. Those are some of the most gutless gas powered engines since the 6-cylinders of the 50s and 60s. Like Ice said, you have to nail the gas pedal just get any kind of movement out of the vehicle. My father has a 3.1 Corsica and it feels like someone stuck a banana in the tail pipe and closed off the intake snorkel with a C-clamp. *GUTLESS* . Even the 190hp Maxima would wipe the track with that turd.

I sent you a PM. I had a 2002 Alero for a rental for 2 weeks the car is peppy but that is aboutit no way will it beat a Maxima. What I don't understand about GM is why such a large displacement engine 3.4L and a measly 170Hp/200tq?

I drove a 2k Grand Am for almost a week while my '99 Max was in the body shop, and the experience was horrible. It really felt like there were some hamsters under the hood instead of a 3.1L V6. The whole time I couldn't convince myself that this engine was actually bigger than the one in my Max.

As for why GM makes such lame engines, it's because they can get away with it. They should come up with a new engine designation called "LOTEC" or something. It's cheap for GM to keep producing these high-displacement pushrod engines rather than get off their duffs and develop something new. They're being lazy because they know Americans(in general, but especially their own customers) aren't as picky when it comes to cars. Look at GM's offerings in Europe, and you'll see a big difference.
If you read some of the British car magazines like Car, Evo, and Top Gear, you'll see how harsh the Europeans can be. Once, Car was talking about the new Lexus LS430. They said that it actually had a trace of styling this time. To them, the previous models looked like it had been 'placed in a windtunnel and had pieces hacked off until the whistling stopped.' Now that's what I call .

I know this post has been dead for a while but i just had to bring it back....Yes as a matter fact this race happened this afternoon..Heres what went down.

We both left around the same time and there is a four lane out in front of the university that goes for at least 10 miles (we both go home this way also). Well we were side by side doing 60...i told him that on 3 horns we would go, he shook his head and i hit the horn 3 times...and he didnt go! then i slow down and tell him on 3 again, well this time he eases in front of me and on the second horn he took off...I was like WTF?? so we got a red light a little ways up the road. he was torque braking and i was too, light turned green and i WALKED him like a dog. I was manually shifting, dunno about him but i do know he got After we ran he pulled over into a gas station parking lot and motioned for me to follow him, well i pull in behind him and hes like yeah man my air filter is extremly dirty and i am losing all kind of power...then he proceed to play it off by opening his hood and popping the air filter out (which was a brand new filter....) and starts dusting it off and stuff. Then he starts saying stuff like "yeah thats why you beat me so bad"...But yes the race FINALLY did happen and i handed him his **** talkin ****!

Good old 60 deg POS GM V6. What a damn waste of money and material. Why don't they just cut off 2 cylinders off the LS1 and use that? At least it would have some semblance of respect then!

Here is food for thought.
I raced a 2000 3.4 Alero in my old auto '98 max.
Compare the 190 bhp to 170 bhp.
I still killed him.
I have rented many Aleros and have always found them slow.
I find myself driving everywhere with my foot to the floor.
The 3.4L is not quick off the line at all.
I also have a Grand Am with 3.4L Ram Air (wife's car).
It is pathetic off the line.
The 3.4L in most cars is set up for the highway not racing.
GO SHOW HIM WHAT YOU GOT.

Nice kill, those Aleros are slow and I plain handed one is @$$ when we raced, he kept talking about how his displacement makes up the difference in my hp and I said what good is displacement if you don't have any torque to back it up.

We started from a stop and I spanked him by 3 cars, then we went from a roll at 55 because he said that's where his displacement gave him the edge, I murdered him by 4 1/2 cars to 100 then we shut down.

Just like your boi, he started making excuses and everything was, I haven't had a tune-up in 3,000 miles, my oil is dirty as hell and my plugs keep fouling so something must be wrong with my O2 sensors.

I said yeah, whatever, you go get your car tuned up and we'll see the next time, I called him yesterday to see if he was up and guess what he still hasn't gotten a tune up yet, or oil change or 02 sensor fix. Just more excuses, besides I already owned him and he's afraid because he knows it won't matter once he gets all his work done and I still own him that he will have no more excuses.
Pathetic ain't it.

Allow me to chime in here. Technically, the Malibu, Alero, and Grand Am share the same platform. With that said and my personal experiences driving them, you should handily smoke a stock Alero (especially when it gets to 105-110 because the governor kicks in).

The key thing is your launch.

However, a 2K2 should absolutely destroy a stock version of the aforementioned vehicles off the line.
