Fog lights with HightBeams Rewire?

Is there a write up on how to rewire fogs to stay on with high beams?

Hmmm there goes my plan to have 2k2 hids, hid high beams and fogs on at the same time.

Man what do you have against on coming traffic!

It's not all that difficult to do, I just don't care to have it, so I didn't do it when I wired them on with the running lamps. If I remember correctly, when you switch to high beams the ground to one of the relay terminals is removed thus turning them off. I think I rigged a ghetto ground wire and they came on. The only problem is that they stayed on either when the car was on or all the time, I don't remember. However, you can EASILY ground that terminal and put a switch inside the car that you flip. Just don't forget to turn it off or you might kill your battery.

If you REALLY want this and have decent wiring skills, email me and I can probably help you out.

Ya man that would be cool! Any basic info to have them rewired so they can stay on with high beams would be great. Also can you confirm the high beam bulb is a 9005? Do you think it would be possible to have a 9005 hid kit put into that lense? Driving alone at night with low hids, fogs and high beam hids would be awesome!

Basically when activating the high beam with 2k2 hids does it only activate the high beam portion of the bulb? Or regular low beam and it is just directed higher?

Ok. First things first. Do the foglight rewire mod and then EMAIL me.

Yes, the high beam bulb is a 9005. There is currently not a 9005 HID retrofit kit, but there MIGHT be a dual beam(high/low) 9005 kit coming soon:

The stock 2K2 headlamps have a SEPARATE high and low beam. The low is the HID burner. The high is the halogen 9005. When you have the low beams on, the HID is on. Then when you switch to high beams the 9005 ALSO turns on. Is that what your asking?

Ok when the high beams go on the hids (low) stay on and the high beam comes on. My question is when the high beam bulb is activated is it the low or high beam portion of the bulb? I think you already answered the question by letting me know about the 9005 hid retrofit with hi/lows?

Ok, now I get what your asking me.

The 9005 is a single filament bulb thus it ONLY has one output level(high beam). There is no low beam filament.

The 9005 hid retrofit kit would allow you to have DUAL low beams(one stock and one from the 9005 side of the housing), but with high beams the 9005 would somehow switch to a different burner or something.

This may be just a rumor and I don't know how it works.

Awesome! This is the exact info I was looking for!

Also to have my fogs on with my high beams is there a short cut route than your exisiting fog rewire?

Probably, if you only care to have the fogs on with low and high beam NOT with just running lamps.

I'll look at my ESM and see IF I can figure it out from the wiring diagrams. If not, you'll have to wait until I can get under the hood again and figure out which relay wires do what. It's been too long for me to blindly tell you what to do.

BTW, you have a 2K2 so the wiring colors may be different, but I don't think that's going to be a problem.

So there is a possible two routes:

1. Being able to have the fogs on with running lights (the fogs can be turned on and off), running lights, lows and highs. <----------- Best route

2. Being able to have the fogs on with just lows and highs. - fogs off with running lamps. Switch lights on fogs automatically come on on high or low?

I have a 2001 Maxima.

Actually, on Canadian cars the high-beam bulbs do double duty as the DRL lights and high beams.

I'm not sure whether they use separate filaments or just reduce power going to the 9005 bulb to do the DRL.

I have a 2001 Maxima.

It all depends on how the stock fog lamp switch and high beam selector controls the relay. These things are NEVER black and white. You change one thing it affects 2-others. You may lose functional use of the stock fog light switch, so the fogs come on anytime the lights are on, but that can be rewired also. Or maybe you can control the fogs by adding an external switch that you control on the dash. Or maybe the fogs will stay on all the time even when the car is off.

You can rewire the fogs to do ANYTHING you want, but that would take a lot of time and wire splicing.

Let me do some searching in the ESM tonight to refresh my memory BEFORE I shoot myself in the foot.

Actually, it's still a single filament bulb that they cycle on/of very fast causing it to run at 50% capacity. Therefore, reducing bulb life considerably.

Assuming there was a 9005 hid kit available having the DTRL on would be terrible (some custom wiring for sure). Also I wonder how we are going to be able to aim the 9005 hids? This project will get interesting once the 9005 hids become available.

edit: so essentially the 9005 hids would act as day time running lights (would have to rewire that cycle issue) and if they had high beams they would work. Be crazy actually dual low beam hids and stock low hid with high beam hid!

or

Have the stock hids on during the day (act as day time running lights) eliminate daytime running lights to the 9005 and just have 9005 hids for high beams?
