Tranmission Question..For 02's

Hey Guys,

I just bought a Demo 02 SE. Although new to the Max word, I am not new to tuning Nissans (200SX Turbo, 2 Classic SE-Rs, G20T, and 2000 Sentra SE). I am also a member of B15sentra.net if anyone is a part of that also..

I noticed there is a TSB on the transmission for 00-01. I notice that under WOT the transmission seems to hang alittle between shifts (1st and 2nd). Almost like the TSB states. I also noticed that every once in a while, the trans shifts really hard into 2nd at low engine speeds (light throttle applications).

I have a dealer appt on Monday, but wanted to know if anyone with a 02 is having or had a similar problem. If so, what did you dealer replace. Since the hard upshift is not a constant thing, I would like to give the dealer as much heads up as possible.

Thanks Guys

Hi there:
I think the question now is: how will u duplicate these problems when you go to your dealer on Monday? slippage tends to occur more often when the tranny is cold. Therefore, I would arrive a bit early and have ur car sit there for a while to cool down.
How hard is the shifting? Does it happen only when the tranny is cold? Maybe the tranny is shifting "fast" but not "hard". what I meant by fast is that it takes a short time to engage into another gear.
your problem does not sound like 2k and 2k1's tranny splipping. the TSB problem is noticible and it takes a long time to shift into another gear. In additon....the parts involved in the TSB are the solenoid and TCM. I believe 2k2 have a newer tranny/solenoid/TCM to handle the engine.

so far....I've only heard one 2k2 auto in .org has such problems.

I might be the other 2k2 with this problem. When cold, the trans takes quite a long time to complete the 1-2 shift and ends up being hard (usually when your into the gas, anything over 1/4 throttle). The other thing I've noticed, is when I'm in 3 and manually shift to D and hold the pedal steady while doing this, the rpms go up a few hundred rpms (according to the gauge), and then it shifts. And don't think of lifting the throttle and then get back on the gas just before any shift, or else - BAM! - hard shift. But after the trans warms up, the 1-2 shift issue disappears.

To sum it up, I'm just waiting for the trans to grenade any day now. The trans is horrible, but I really love the car. I think we just got junk transmissions.

The funny thing, is my car had 600 miles on it when I took delivery. I wonder if it is a trans break in problem. You know, the dealership beating on the car constantly, before the trans is broken in. Maybe that's the issue.

I have an appointment for them to look into this (and the CD changer problem..and they mentioned the rear deck rattling, so maybe they'll do something about that) on the 25th. We'll see.

Ok. first the Transmission does not do anyting wrong when cold. There are two problems that I experience with the transmission:

1: I notice that under WOT the transmission seems to hang alittle between shifts (1st and 2nd). It's like this. Dead stop. Hammer it, then right when it hits redline, the RPM slowly drop, drop, drop then thump shift. It does not shift hard under these conditions.

2: I also noticed that every once in a while, the trans shifts really hard into 2nd at low engine speeds (light throttle applications). This is the really wierd problem. It does not happen all the time, but when it does it feels like the trans is going to land on the ground. I am starting to worry about motor mounts at this point.

I hope that clarifies it. Hawk25, I hope they resolve your problem. It's wierd that it happens in exact opposite condidions.

...I have same probs you do sometimes, in Texas it is hot during the summer, and when my tranny is hotter than usual, like stop and go city driving in August, the 1st to 2nd shifts are like a baseball bat hit under my car when under light throttle. BAM!

Funny thing is, now that it is cooler, and the overall ambient temp of my car is cooler, the tranny is behaving much better. I have done a syn tranny fuid swap to Mobil 1 which helped but not eliminiated the problem. Also I am considering a tranny cooler, that should help a lot. A lot of guys on here swear by them... Good luck.

Update...

I took my car in twice for the problem. The first time they could not replicate the problem. The second time, I had a tech ride with me to show him the problem. After he felt the problem, They gave me a loaner, and took the car.

4 Days later, the car was returned to me Shifting could not be detected at all. Just smooth consistant power.

Solution:

They Replaced Trasmission Solinoids. Problem Solved...
