Wheel Size and Ride Quality

I've done a lot of searching on this but I haven't found the answer I've been looking for. Now I have the stock 17x7 225/50 wheel setup (w/eibachs), and I am pleased w/ the ride quality. I read that if I upgraded to a 17x8 wheel w/ 245/45 tires the ride quality would be similar (comfort level). What if I went with 18x8 and 245/40? Will my ride be super stiff? PS, I live in NY and the streets here blow? Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Generally as you decrease the sidewall height (the function of aspect ratio X width), things get stiffer. Alot depends on the manufacturer and model of tire as well.

i'm still running stock rims (17s) but switched to a slightly wider, slightly shorter (sidewall height) tire (245/40/17). i definitely noticed a ride difference, it's much stiffer with the shorter sidewalls. and it seems like the wider they get, the more they pull you around, esp on a FWD car - which all makes sense. the ruts on the highway grab me more, and the crappy roads and rail crossings and steel plates and cobblestone and stuff all are more noticable.

i'd also add that i run these tires at a higher psi (38) to protect the sidewalls from said bumps and jolts (as i already lost one a few months ago to a pothole ) and that surely contributes a bit to the stiff ride. but it's still pretty stiff, either way, even at a "normal" pressure.

I had the 18x8 with the 235/40-18 and it was rough and then I went to the 245/40-18 and the ride was much better... go with that size on an 18" wheel...

Did you have to add any spacers, roll fenders, etc to make those fit? That's the same setup I'm going with, but I didn't know what I'd have to do to make it work. You had the Kumhos right? How did it ride on the eibachs compared to stock?

No spacers no fender rolling they fit fine. I had the kuhmos, I had the nittos and I personally liked the Nittos better. I think the ride quality on the eibachs is fine. It is stiffer, bu**** what you would expect. Not too harsh. You might want to maximadave on the forum. I set him up with 18x8 Anteras with the 245/40-18 Nittos and he is on maxspeed springs. I think it is very worth the change.

I like the Maxspeeds in principle too, I just wasn't sure the drop was as good as the Progress or the Eibach. I love the progress drop, but I'm not seriously high on turning the max into a cut spring type riding Civic....

Maxspeed is cool but the drop is not enough man. Get the Progress Springs. Thats wat im riding on. 18 x 7.5 w 235/40/18 (ride quality is really stuff compared to the stock 16's and thick tires) I was debating between Maxspeed or Progress. Id recommend the Progress. The Drop is pretty good with the Progress. Id like the front somewhat lower, but then id hafta get coilovers. Maxspeeds wont drop it enough. Progress 1.7 in front 1.5 in back. Good Clean Drop (Kills Most of the Wheel gap)

What struts are you using with your Progress? If you are using stock struts they aren't going to last very long. The load rating of the progress is much different than stock springs.

A combination of AGX and Progress seems like a pretty popular application, albeit a rough ride. That's the price you pay for being loc'd out though my friends.

Lookin suave hurts the butt, but it's still damn sweet

I just put 18x8 rims with 245 40 18 tires with stock front shocks, rear KYB AGX's with H&R springs. The ride is amazing. I live in southern NJ and travel to Jersey City everyday. Highway plus city driving and this set up was well worth every dollar. These few mods brings the handling characteristics to a new level. Its great driving this car with all the power and handling now, I enjoy every minute of my commute in my ride.
