Speed Limiter Removal

OK. I've checked the FAQs, and How-To's / Installations, and yes I did a search as well. If I missed it, its because I'm human. Two days ago while playing with a GTP on the freeway, the speed limiter shut me down at about 137 mph. I usually don't get up this fast, but it still irritated the Hell out of me. I've read that in order to eliminate this top speed limiter, an additional speed/rev meter needs to be installed. What I'd like to know, is if there is any way to accomplish this same thing without the speed/rev meter? If not, which meter is going to be the best (most user friendly) for the 5th Gens?
I've done quite a bit of looking at the SAFC from APEXi, but looking at some of the features, I'm somewhat afraid I'm gonna get exploring a little too much and start screwing things up. Any information would be appreciated, especially those who have done this already.

Thanks. Dave

Hm...I wonder if its a good idea to remove the governor...If you put your car in neutral and rev the engine without a governer past redline, i'm pretty sure you will do damage.

You could try swapping the ECU for one from a 2K SE 5speed. I don't know if it'll work or if anyone has even tried it but I know those don't have speed limiters, at least the ones that came with V or Z rated tires from the factory.

The other way was cut the wire that supplies the speed signal from the gauges to the ECU (or was it ECU to gauge?). But you won't know how fast you're going and the ECU will throw an error code.

PHATMAN, we're talking about a speed limiter not the RPM limiter.

if you remove the rev limiter, then this is true..

but he was talking about removing the 'speed' limiter which wouldn't be an issue if you're in neutral...

the best way to remove a speed limiter is to buy an APEXi RSM(Rev and Speed Meter).

Get a Apexi RSM and that will remove your limiter. Beware though, it does cause a CEL on some cars (not sure about 5th gens though). It threw mine in my 99 Max everytime I went over 120mph.

The 2K (SE / GLE) are drag limited. Done 140-1-2 a few times and in each case I was only around 6000RPM, tons of room left 'till the limiter.

I've got a 2K1 SE that came with H rated 16" tires. Think thats why I've got a spee limiter at 137 mph. Aren't H-Rated tires rated to 138 mph? Oh well. Looks like I'm gonna look into the Apexi rev/speed meter. Thanks guys.

i have a 2k2 gle, and i went to 120 and i couldn't go any further than that... and i still had room left for the rpm meter.

but on this other highway i went to 130 and couldn't go pass that.. my rpm would just go up fast, but stay around 130.

so i went back to the first highway i went too. and i only went to 120. how weird is this??? does elevation make a difference?? cuz i think the first highway(120) is higher than the second highway i went too. but yea... i heard the apexi RSM was good.
