First, as a new member to maxima.org I'd like to say
this seems like a very informative group and technically
the best forum format I've seen.

My 2000 SE idles at about 800 RPM when fully warmed up
in normal weather and about a grand in cold (33ish for
Houston). I could sit in the car in the morning for
an awful long time waiting for it to drop down to one
kilorev before putting it in gear and I usually don't
but this seems like it would be hard on the transmission.
Is it idling too fast? Is this adjustable or is it
programmed in the chip?

hmm

i am somewhat a newbee here as well.. and i have learned here that u should not start your engine and let it run idle for a more than 1 minute..if u let the car just sit there, it ruins the engine.. after a minute of idling. u should drive the car...i dunno if we are talking about the same thing here.. but yeah.. dont let idle around for to long right when u start the engine... it can harm it...

Mine idles about the same. There was a thread about gas mileage once upon a time that you may want to read. Use the "search" option for "5th Generation" topics.

I have noticed if I warm my car up for 5+ minutes in the morning before driving it, it gets better gas mileage than just starting it up and driving. Somebody stated it runs richer when first started, versus when it gets warmed up.

I have noticed a difference in gas mileage, nonetheless.

My last car's ('89 Mazda MX6 turbo 5 speed) manual mentioned
that you should not just start the car and let it warm up
so I touch the throttle frequently after lighting it up.
The Maxima manual did not mention this but did add the
complication about holding the throttle down if starting
the engine in hot weather if it has been less than 30
minutes since the last run. It's hard to know what to
do based on what they tell you in the "dumb owner's"
book so you just have to add up what you've heard.

thats good to know.....

Well, It usually gets to be about 10 - 20 degrees here and sometimes lower in the mornings when i go off to work. So, i always start my car and let it run until it warms up, usually taking about 4 minutes to do so. I just got an automatic starter for it, so reguardless what the manual says, im gonna use it. :-P That whole Nissan handbook seems like a bunch of crap to me anywayz. Ive read thru most of it and you would think that you didnt own a car but a warhead or something. Anyway, one more thing; I have also noticed a difference in performance versus me warming up the car before shifting to drive and just turning it on and going. When its cold, it seems sluggish, kinda b*tchy if ya ask me, like its pissed off you took it out in the cold.

Seems like we got a little off topic . . .

huaco's original question was whether his Max is idling too fast when fully warmed up. The short answer is, yes. My Zone Rep recently set my idle speed at 625 rpm. So 800 rpm does seem a little high.

I'd suggest you take your vehicle into your dealer and have them check it out.

Mine idles around 700 rpm. As for warming up your car, there was a big discussion about that in the General Forum. Check it out if you are interested.
