Engine Knocking and lifter clatter...

Has anyone else experienced this??? I have a 2000 GLE with less than 18,000 miles on it. Had to pull the car out of the garage to get the Christmas stuff down from the storage area. When done, I started the car back up and pulled it back in the garage. So far all is normal. Went out the next morning and started the car and it sprang to life with a terribly loud engine knock, lifter clatter, and rough idle. The real loud knock started to subside after 2 seconds and the engine eventually smoothed out and all was running normal after about 2 minutes. Shut the engine down and checked oil level, etc. and all was normal. Started back up normally and ran normal the rest of the day.

I've used Mobil 1 with the Mobil 1 oil filter since new, changing religously after each 3000 miles. I Also only use Mobil Premuim fuel.

I'm guessing the two "cold" starts (I live in Florida and the temp was no colder than 55) somehow overloaded the cylinders with unburnt fuel.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? You can bet I'll avoid this scenario again and wanted to warn others.

like clockwork.. run the the car for less than a minute, let it sit for 24 hours then try to start it. You will either have a seriously difficult time starting AND/OR what you describe.

Its just a maxima thing However, no one has had any other problems related to this. I try to let the car warm up for a few mins before shutting back down.

I have had this on my two VQ engines....95 Max and 2000 I30. I have heard the problem is just what you suspected, unburned fuel

Thanks for the info... I feel a little better now that it's a normal condition, but anytime an engine that normally runs so smooth and quiet makes this much noise, there must be some damage taking place.

Interestingly, this weekend, a friend with a new Toyota pickup pulled his truck out to wash it, and pulled it right back in the garage when he was done. This morning he came in and described the same the same type of noise on startup so it's apparently not limited to the Maxima.

I'll always make sure to avoid this starting scenario again.

well, this is exactly why I run Mobile1, I want that oil to pump as quickly as possible. Tons of people have complained, they say there is no damage from it.
