on the road... need help with a knock

I'm on I-25 heading to Colorado and I'm having a mess of a time with my 2000 Maxima. Let me preface this by saying that I always use 91+ octane gas.... But apparently, I got some bad gas from Diamond Shamrock cause my engine has started knocking pretty bad. It only happens after driving for 30-40 minutes at 80 mph plus. But when it starts, I have to pull off the road and let the engine cool... I've also been dropping my speed to about 70 in the hopes the heat won't be as bad and might help detonation.... Don't have a clue if that's true but it seems to be working (as my wife is driving as I type).

Well, here's my questions. I still have half a tank of this crap and I'm wondering if I should by some additive and add it to the gas.... If so, does it matter which/what I get? Does anyone have any experirnce with this issue? My mechanic told me never to buy them as it just gets tar deposits on the fuel injectors... But he also said I should try using 87 octane for the same reason, so maybe I need a new mechanic.

Also what should you do as soon as your engine knocks or pings? Slow down, stop, let the engine cool?..... Anything else?

Any help is appreciated. We'll be stopping at the hotel for the night soon so I'll be checking in the morning for any responses.

BTW, how much damage is being done to my engine tonight? In total there's been about a dozen knocks, two that I thought I could almost feel through the gas peddle! :-\

There might be water in the gas that you've pumped. Try adding a bottle or two (depends on the size) of gas anti-freeze and fill up your tank w/quality gasoline (Shell/Chevron/Sunocoo 94+, if available in your area) to dilute the old gasoline. Also, when did you last have your tune-up? Could be foul plugs?

I'm just pulling into Albuquerque, NM so I will stop at a Chevron to do as you say. My last tune up was about 15k miles ago so I doubt it's the plugs. But it is wierd that it only seems to happen when the engine is working a little harder for a longer period. Thanks for the response.

No problem guy! I hope a new batch of "good" gasoline will resolved your car's issue.
