i was wondering if you guys have had any problems at all with your new car. Or are there "problems" that I should be looking for?

not really...

My floor AC/heater duct on the passenger side kinda whistles whne the fan is set to position 2 or 3, but that is all that I have noticed in 3 weeks. If your car is super black or grey luster, then you may want to watch out for chips on the hood and bumper from rocks nad insects.

I have the same problem with my AC/heater. The whistling is especially noticeable on position 2. Also there is slight creaking sound when travelling at speed. Haven't quite figured out what it is but will be checking the A-pillar, glove box, etc (various items 2k owners have complained about.)

I have not had any problems but the AMB (temp)gauge being off. I will say that if you ask any group of any car owner they will always have some problems, with ANY car. The Nissan is a GREAT car and would never hesitate buying one.

I don't have a 2001, but I bought my 2000 brand new. You probably can't tell or hear of any problems when its brand new. My problems started at 4,000miles. The Stereo faceplate rattles( no matter how cold or warm, this always rattles over tar strips!). Now my passenger side A-pillar rattles. But this stopped today, AFTER we finally reached a thawing 24degrees F You can check out TSB's or Recalls at this link- http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/

I also have a whistling noise from the fan on the same positions - is this a problem that can get fixed or is it the nature of the beast?

Bought a 2k1 about a week ago. I saw a few scratches on the car, salesman assured me they would be gone when they detail it...They just got WORSE!!! After complaining like hell for two days, they finally buffed them out and replaced the headlamps and wippers. Windshield has 3 million micro-scratches on it. They refused to replace that. It appears that one of their banners had fallen down on the car and scratched it. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE, I would never return to HUNTINGTON BEACH NISSAN, even if they pay me. Here's a quote from the service manager the morning after we bought the car in, "Sir, surely the car did not leave the dealership like that." Sales guy gave us the impression that a cd changer could be installed and still have the bose radio controll it. They installed a Pioneer rf changer and said that they have never installed a changer which directly hooks up the the radio.

SE's advice: Inspect EVERYTHING. DO NOT drive the car off the lot, until you are 110% satisfied. Know the options on the car and what the dealer can add or remove.

SE Man-It sounds like you have a problem with the dealer rather than your new car. Why did you take a car with scratches on it? I'd be damned if I spent $24k on a car and it was AFU. I've heard bad stories about that dealer before, either here or on the Edmunds board. Some salesman will do anything for a sale. Your advice holds true for any car you buy. Good luck.

I think it's a dealer thing - when I bought the car, they through in two years free oil change (every 3000 miles). If you bought you car recently check with the dealer, because all the nissan dealers in my area were/are offering that.

Not really...

No problems with mine. The only thing that's annoying the hell out of me, is the rear deck rattle with the bose sub, and front wheel drive.
Other than that i'm happy.
peace
i did get 4 1st oil changes free.

...have 1800 miles on my 2K1 AE SE 5 speed. My only complaint is the Bridgestone Potenzas. And that because I hardly stay below 80 mph...I'm not getting the mileage I did with my 93 SE 5spd. Anybody else out there hate the potenzas (harsh ride) and do something about it?

How many miles do you have on the car? These are unusual problems for a nissan, especially a Maxima.

near-perfect

We have 1800 miles on our AE. The only possible improvement I am thinking of is having the tires re-balanced. I notice some thrumming a various speeds. Feels like the right front is just a hair off. Or it could possibly be an alignment problem. But I am just being picky because I can't find anything wrong and that is a tough thing to say for a QA engineer.

21.75 mpg in commuting traffic.

I can't wait until the engine loosens up a bit and I can really start pressing it.

Interesting comment about your tires ont the AE; my issue with this car has been the tires...have many posts on the Potenza RE92's that came on it. I'm trying to get the dealer to take 'em back for credit so I can get something else...would like to have Michelin Pilot XGT Z4's. Let me know how your ride quality changes...I'll be very interested. I've had my tires balanced twice already and rotated once. I have 2200 miles on my 2K1 AE SE 5 speed.

My Max (2000) is Icelandic Pearl and I can tell you that the paint sucks. It chips very easily. I have about 40 chips in my hood (no kidding) and no telling how many in the front bumper. Most of the chips in the front bumper are from insects. I am going to have a chat with Nissan about this.

whistle while I work

I too have the whistling/schreeching A/C problem. A one hour commute every day and I am about to go insane. I finally got it to make the noise for a nissan service guy and they say it is the fan blower motor. Great but the part is on national backorder... It may take 2 months to come in. My 01 GLE is only 3 months old so 2 months will be an eternity. Has anyone else gotten any other/better responses?

I know there is a TSB on the 2K A/C fan motor.
If there is a TSB, shouldn't Nissan make sure the inventory is sufficient to indemnify the issue?

Other than the A/C screeching, I think I would love this car. It's like having to wait for your high school sweetheart's acne to clear up before you ask her on a date.
(i had though of a much sicker analogy but I resisted)

I have thid big BIG problem wit my Max.. I just can't stop admiring it. I wake up in the mornig an think of the smooth powerfull ride I get. Sometimes I get jealous bacause some many people keep telling me how good she looks. I had to put it in a sheltered garage because so strangers would not touch her will I was not around. Not that she would be unfaithful with a factory install alarm and the club and all. But I wash and wax (tri-wax) it every weekend. I'm becomming obsessed.....

ECU/Throttle Problems

Hello, I'm new to this board and glad to know there are other fellow Maxima enthusiasts out there.

In just under two weeks I have put on over 1000 miles.

My problem is with the OVERLY sensitive throttle. The way my car lurches/bucks when I'm cruising and then slightly press or release the gas pedal is annoying as hell. I have driven hundreds of cars during my summers as a Valet during college and have only drove a couple cars that behaved this way. Most had severely worn clutches and jacked transmissions. However, I NEVER expected this from the "flagship" model of Nissan. I'm still not sure whether I can live with this annoyance, so I'm starting to look into Lemon Laws in Arizona. Besides this, I have really enjoyed driving the car. I love the 222hp engine, handling, and cool auto dimming rearview mirror, but I just wish the Nissan Software Engineers had spent a little more time on developing the software for the ECU(Electronic Control Unit). However, since only about 15% of Maximas are 5-speeds and many of the owners don't notice the problem or care, I doubt Nissan will ever attempt to fix it.

I also found out AFTER I noticed my ECU/throttle problem, through the power of the internet, that I'm not the only person to notice a problem with the way my Maxima drives. Check this out if you notice any similiar problems: http://www.nissanmaximaproblems.com/.

I just graduated college with a Computer Engineering degree and plunked down some serious cash for this beautiful car. I also know a lot about how ECU's are designed and what the guys in the above link suspect is the reason is definitely possible. I've installed/programmed an ECU on a racecar for a senior project in college and I just started working for a company that designs ECU's for jet engines. The software controls how sensitive the gas pedal(throttle) is and how the throttle reacts under certain load and operating conditions. Therefore, I expect that the only true fix will be for every Maxima to have their ECU reprogrammed, which would cost Nissan MILLIONS of dollars. So, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Anybody, have any knowledge about how Lemon Laws work?

P.S: Try holding 2000 RPMs in neutral once your car has warmed up. Impossible! The ECU forces the RPMS to climb, then as you try to slightly release the pedal they drop. Also, ever notice when you let off the gas pedal and quickly push in the clutch sometimes the RPMS increase. These examples don't necessarily effect your driving the car, but point towards how the ECU controls the throttle and NOT you!

This issue has been talked to death in this forum and at edmunds.com. Some think there is a problem, some don't. Y2kSE is fighting Nissan over this. So most if not all of us know of this "problem". Still love the car though.
