Almost caught doing 120mph!

Driving home on I75 N in Ohio (2:30am), I got the urge to open my max up. Confidence in my radar detector, the 8" of snow fall in the median (the snow preventing a quick U-turn by a trooper), and the light traffic, I took the chance.

I accelerated down a hill, over a long bridge finally reaching 120mph or so. As I came up another hill I caught up to some traffic, so I let off the gas, hit resume on my cruise, and coasted around a semi. I got back in the right (slow) lane with the rest of the traffic (just after the initial semi). I continued my drive with a more content feeling.

[This is where it got interesting]
Less than a minute later, I was surprised by a state trooper coming up fast in the left lane with an overhead search light toward the the right slow lane. He passed me without hesitation doing well over 100mph (probably 120 or so). I'm still not sure where he came from (going the other direction, just getting on the hwy behind me???). He was out of my sight in 30 seconds or so. I was soooo shocked! I knew that he was surely looking for me and assuming I was still speeding up ahead.

Two or Three minutes later, I saw the flashing lights up ahead confirming he'd pulled someone over. As I got closer to the trooper and his victim, I couldn't believe my eyes!!!! A 2k, or 2k1 max just like mine was pulled over. As I got closer and passed them, I saw that the max was the same color as mine too (sterling mist)! The only major difference on my car is the 2k2 HIDs that I've added.

I could only laugh and feel sorry for the other max. He was the scapegoat for my behavior.

Dude - yer soooo lucky. You have to find some back roads to get some real speed - the ones with cornfields on both sides for miles.

BTW - what is the top speed of a 2k2 or 2k3 Maxima? Is it governed or drag limited?

I had a '96 T-bird w/ the 4.6L V8 and that stupid thing was governed at 105mph...pathetic. It would hit a certain RPM and just shut down - the RPMs would drop and then it would kick in a second or so later.

I figured I'd ask about the top speed rather than attempt it myself.

Dude same thing to me a few nights ago...

Was crusing with the GF she is like punch it! We are going down a hwy with a concrete median about 3 feet tall. I hit 130 mph and I look to the left their is a Minnesota State Trooper on the Northbound lane I crusied past him as he flashes his spot light at me and turns on the cherries. Well their is no way the guy could have got me himself he had to go up a 1.4 mile exit then loop around to come back and get me. Needless to say we just kept on going slowed to about 80 mph and went home. Sorry didnt mena to jack your thread just ironic!

man, life sucks for the other guy even if they didnt take them to jail on the spot (which is likely). And some states consider that a felony now, so job prospects would also be a problem for them..

then theres' the matter of their new insurance rate. I'd feel like crap if I set someone up like that.

If memory serves me correctly, I think Ozzfather did that to some kid in a mustang, and look how that thread turned out!

Coincidence...

I do feel bad despite the fact that it was a coincidence. Although I'm thankful for the trooper's error, I have to fault him somewhat for incorrect identification. I just hope that the driver and his passengers (he had several people in the car) denyed it and got a break.

I can only imagine...

The look on the guys face when the cop came at him (probably with gun drawn) yelling at him for doing 120MPH! He was probably like WTF????

Although that REALLY sucks for him. Hopefully it was an old guy and the cop realized his mistake. I would feel terrible doing that to someone.

Define "old".

Oh you are lucky

After a 115(spent the night in jail) and a 95 mph ticket in my 70' Cuda(10 years ago) I no longer do the top speed runs, but man I get the urge

BTW On my 95 mph ticket I am sure a trucker called it in so be careful, radar detector or not.

Does that mean your detector didn't even catch the signal from the patrol? What is your radar detector? I'm thinking about getting one but need to cross out yours first.
Hopefully they are not too many using instant on type.

Very true! A trucker may very well have signaled the trooper.

No, that doesn't mean that my detector didn't pick up the trooper. It means that the trooper either was tipped off by a truck to my "fast" speed. Or, (as it the case many times) he "visually estimated" my speed.

As any radar detector user knows, police don't always use their radar. Half the time they don't even have it on, either because they're not patroling, or cause they can sneek up on people with detectors (be stealth like). Sometimes they even flip their radar on just as you're going by so you don't have any warning.

My detector is not top of the line, but if there is radar or laser in the area, it goes off. I have tons of false alarms like automatic doors, or banks.

If he was going the other direction and saw my vehicle, he could have easily seen that I was going way too fast. Not that he neccessarily could tell my exact speed, but they can visually tell in most cases that you're over the regular traffic flow speed.

about 80% of cops that drive by me dont have their radar on, usually more have them on at night though. The thing that is bad about a local highway/expressway by my house (elgin o' hare) is that the cops always use lasars, so they point and shoot, so my radar detector doesnt give enough warning, luckly theres not many places to turn around so, both times a cop has come after me, i am gone by the time they decide where to turn around

Wow - small world. I'm over in Palatine and I've been on Elgin/O'hare myself. My fiance's folks are in the Dekalb area so I just open her up when I'm out there. The cops in the burbs are real d%$kheads.

Seems like many of us have been lucky lately. This afternoon I buffed a guy in a jeep with the 360 V8 - boy, was he suprised! Not good on New Year's Eve, Smokey is all over the place.

As to the top speed, I heard from a friend 156 MPH is the absolute limit. Can anyone confirm this? I'd bet that was with a 6 speed. Does anyone know the top limit with an auto? Do they sell Maximas in Germany, and has anyone taken one on the Autobahn?
