Egine Knock/Blue Smoke

The last few times that my '02 SE 6speed Maxima has sat for more than a day, when I have started it there has been a slight engne knocking, and I have never looked for smoke from the tailpipe. Today I started it after it sat for two days, and it had a horrible knock to it for about the first 20 seconds it was running, along with a loping idle and quite a bit of blue smoke from the tailpipe.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you brought it up to the dealer with any results? Please let me know...thanks!

looks like oil may be getting past the seals when the car is not running and combusting on startup... take it to the dealer and have them look at it... this should not happen on such a new car.

If I can remember correctly to when I had to fix up my 74 camaro... blue smoke meant an oil problem.. usually not a good thing. I'd say take it to the dealer tomorrow and try to get it squeezed in.. (or whenever, but asap)

correct me if i am wrong

I dont see what the rush is, just have it looked at when you get a chance. BTW blue smoke means your engine is burning oil, not good..

Ya, I know it's oil smoke. I figure it's probably either the valve guides or even pistons rings, allowing oil to bypass when it sits. I know it's not a good thing, I am just kinda curious if anyone else with a 3.5L has had this same problem. I've had several other Nissan products and never had anything like this, although this is my first Maxima. My '72 240Z smokes about the same at startup as my '02 Maxima now does...kinda depressing.

Valve seals/guides is my guess on the blue smoke. The knocking I feel is associated with something else pistons/rod bearings.

20 seconds of knock? That is bad!

Drop the car off at the dealer have them start it after a couple of days, get it fixed/replaced it is not right. Ofcourse get a maxima rental.

A VQ should purr every waking moment.
