Hey, anyone have any experience with a decent radar detector that is designed to not be obvious?

I know when a cop stops you and sees a radar detector, you're guaranteed a ticket... so I'm looking for something I can hardwire that won't stand out so much.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
David

You can get a V1 with the consealed display unit, pricey but worth it. You can run the wire through the headliner, down the a pillar and right into your fuse box, like I did.

Make sure you get a good detector. Check out http://www.speedzones.com and http://www.radartest.com

The K40 doesn't do very well.

The 3 best are

1) Passport 8500 (brand new model)
2) Bel 980
3) Valentine 1

I have a Passport 8500 with the optional hardwire kit. Mine is mounted up high in front of the rear view mirror. You can get the hardwire kit with a remote indicator as well. Mine is difficult to see from the outside. With the Passport I can go to full dim as well.

There is also a Bel 915 remote. I almost got this one.

For the money, sensitivity and features, you cannot beat the Bel 980, which goes for $220. There isn't a remote indicator for that model, but the digital voice is very nice.

I bought the Bel980 and the Passport 8500 at the same time. The Passport was extremely good at filtering out false signals. Better than any detector I've used. The Bel had equivalent sensitivity though.

I second what Paul said. I also bought a Passport 8500 with hardwire kit and am hardwiring it this weekend. It saved my rear over the holiday travels and seems to do a great fob filtering.

Cool! Finally another Max driver with a Passport. I landed up tapping into my red wire from behind my power/cigarette lighter, using the supplied 3M wireclip tap. I routed the wire behind my B pillar and through the headliner. It was fairly easy.

Thanks for the info, Paul. I was planning on using the cig lighter wire, thanks to shing and Matt from the other forum, but my next task was to try and find it!!! But, based on your post, I think it will be pretty easy. I was planning on going behind the B pillar and through the headliner as well.

I love it, though. It looks great and performs really well. Plus, all the programmable features are nice so I can customize it the way I want it.

bel 915?

Thanks.. it looks like the Bel & Passport got the best ratings. Anyone use the Bel 915? It looks like its ratings were pretty good, and it's a remote. Other than that I can only think of the Escort and trying to hide it behind the rear view mirror.. thing is I'm thinking if I'm ever stopped, the piggie may notice it.
