I figured OD should be off, and I was told that from a start to turn traction control off so the wheels aren't fighting each other and more power is being deliverd to the ground. Is this true??

When do you expect to be entering a highway from a dead stop? Even some of those 'signaled onramps' are often rolling stops at best.
In general, no. What TCS does is limit overall power to the drive wheels until slip (either environmental or torque related) is reduced/eliminated. It does not referee a fight between the wheels. Under a non-slip launch, TCS SHOULD deliver just as much power to the wheels as with it off, I said SHOULD.
Not true. Traction control only starts working
when one or more of the wheels slip, similar to ABS.
If you have no tire slippage it's just as if it were off.
A bit of advise: whomever told you this is a baaaad source of information, I would be very leery of any further opinions from him/her.

Thanks guy's. I was told this, and now I know it's not true. I also remember reading a thread not too long ago about a member who had raced his friend in an Alero and another member had told him to leave TC off when red-light racing(or from a roll). I guess I must be mistaken. Since this is my first car with TC (and alittle power to boot
) I figured it woulden't hurt to ask a couple questions
Okay, wait one: from a roll it's not an issue but
from a standing start, yes, you indeed do want to turn it off, for the same reasons jjs & I outlined above. It's very possible to induce wheelspin from a standing start and if the TC is on, it will sense the wheelspin and activate, retarding fuel and spark advance and essentially killing your run.
rule of thumb: if wheelspin is expected, turn it off!
