Question about the VQ engine

Hey everyone,

My 2K2 Maxima SE 6-speed is my first Nissan ever. I have loved it since day one (about 9 months ago). I have loved the power of the engine. It's so sweet. Well, my roommate is a big Acura guy. He has a 2001 3.2 TL. I let him drive my Maxima the other day, and he brought up something that I really didn't notice up until this point, but made me curious. When you floor it in 2nd gear, the engine gets a HUGE burst of power at about 4,000 RPMs. Does the VQ engine have something similar to VTEC? I didn't think it did, but my roomie asked me because of that huge power increase.

Thanks!

Not actually a VTEC arrangement, more of an intake flow change. There might be some other responses more technically detailed, but if I recall correctly, that is what causes that 'surge'.

Yes, there's a variable intake (I believe that's what it's called). So as your rpms go up, you will be able to produce more power from a less restricted flow.

Also, something else that's kind of cool to take a look at...On a cold day, when you're warming up your car, take a look at the exhaust pipe(s). You'll see that the exhaust smoke is only coming out of one of the pipes--the other one remains closed. However, under WOT, the 2nd pipe opens up, and the exhaust flows much freely.

hmmm...

Do you guys even bother to read through the vehicle specific brochures when look for cars let alone buy them.... these material usually shows all the neato features that the cars have.... The variable intake and exhausts are some of the feature points in the max brochure... having the car makes it all the more interesting to see or feel these features work... well, besides the advertised 255 ponies....

that reminds me, i gotta go pickup an infiniti g35 brochure booklet.... i got one for is300, wrx, and tl/cl's...too

yeah, what's with these guys? on my dyno (which i still haven't sent in to Steve) you can see the variable intake kick in...

I read mine, just wasn't exactly sure what the "official" name of it was--that's all! No need to sound condescending.

No joke. Who says you have to know every bit of engineering behind a car to know that it's a great car and has power to boot? I've had (and loved) mine for 9 months and didn't know any of that. I'm sure that's the case with the vast number of people out there that have Maximas.

Actually, no. I skim the glossy broshure and drive the car. I love finding out new features that I didn't know it had! After I found everything that I could think of, then I read the manual for other things that I didn't find on my own.

It's like getting mods for free!

Yeah, I've noticed the surge at around 4k RPM as well. Actually, I think our engines do have something similar to VTEC. I'm not a mechanic though, nor do I play one.

Besides the variable intake that's mentioned, if you look at the Maxima info on nissanusa.com, there's a mention of
"Variable Timing This lesson in breathing technique comes courtesy of Maxima's Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System. It makes constant, precise adjustments to the opening and closing of the valves based on rpm and throttle position. Which ultimately delivers optimum power and emissions in all cases, all the time."

Sounds quite similar to VTEC. If you wanna read on how VTEC works, see http://www.howstuffworks.com/question229.htm.

bottom line...as the engine revs go up, the intake will switch over to shorter intake runner(hence the variable intake) to speed up the air speed...more power...happier drivers.

There's a little dip in the torque curve right at 3800rpm where the variable intake opens up the secondary runners. So at 4000rpm you'll be feeling a bit of a surge.

It's *NOT* VTEC though

The VQ35DE also has continuously variable valve timing (CVTCS) on the intake valves, but this is stepless, and doesn't vary lift. So you won't feel a kick from it like you would on a typical Honda VTEC.

honestly, i think this 'surge' comes on a little bit quicker with intake+y-pipe than stock...mine starts around 3,500rpm and starts to pull away faster..

i had been wondering this whole time why theres that lil surge after a certain rpm. i was gonna ask you yesterday steve, but i guess you already answered it for me. hehe. i forgot that we had the variable intake. i guess VTEC still has the surge too. but when i looked on your graph (torque graph). the toyota one seemed to kick in a lil late, but has a better boost than the acura and maxima?
