There is a black wire with a thin red stripe on it that runs behind the roof console, you can trace it from the connector on the mirror. Then run the ground to a screw in one of the brackets up there. All you need is 1 wire tap and a little spare wire if the lead from the detector is to thin. See what you think.

That is exactly how I wired my detector. I took my time and I think that I only spent about 30 minutes on the whole job. Not to mention that the radar detector is out of site.

Not only is there pre-programmed equalization, but there is also circuitry that attentuates the bass with volume

Another thing with Bose is that they use low voltage with high impedence to drive everything (amp and speakers). Supposedly that lowers the risk of noise/inference.

As for the clarion tweeters.. the door speaker is 1 ohm. Adding a 4 ohm tweeter is negligable to the amp. Whereas adding a 1 ohm tweeter would be too low (resulting in .5 ohm in the front... arent many amps that can push that) and would require another amplified channel.

So, I suspect they just threw a plain retail 4ohm tweeter in there.

After a few days with these, I'm *really* happy with moderate volume. Up to 3/4 volume, it sounds SOOO much better. More than that and I find myself pulling alittle treble out... or fading to the back on notch. regardless, even at full volume and down a notch on treble, the improvement is pretty evident.

TIMW,

Thanks for the reply.....I agree with what you said but I still feel like Nissan ripped us off (~$1,000 Bose option with Clarion tweets)....I am gonna write to them to see if they have any explanation

Thanks

That happens all the time, in all aspects of life, it is a very common practice.

they arent a ripoff really.. I've seen worse. I'm not sure what you'd expect out of *any* stock system. They arent ever going to approach aftermarket. Just be thankful they can be changed. Most premium systems wouldnt allow that, or would fry if you tried it.

Of all the things to take Nissan to task for, the tweeters would be the last on the list..

Just finished installing the Polk EX3500 tweeters.....it took me a little longer than I thought...those factory brackets are so delicate and my wiring skills aren't the greatest....

Definite improvement !!! Big thanks to TIMW...if it wasn't for your pics, I probably wouldn't of tried it

Improvement?

Hey, I am thinking about getting these. My question is this. Is it really a BIG improvement. I previously had a Honda Accord with the stock system. The BOSE to me is a big improvement. I think it sounds pretty damn good. However, I think the highs could be improved. Are the polks worth the $100? Thanks, just want some feedback from people that have them.

I just did this mod and all I can say is I'm not a stereo guy and the difference to me is slight. It is an easy thing to mod thanks to Timw write up. However since i'm not a music guy, I did notice that the speakers were clearer than the clarion. For $100 bucks and for the thrill of doing this yourself I say go for it. You may want to test some other 4ohm tweets for sound quality but for me I have a tin ear and these tweeters are just fine. Again for me it wasn't earth shattering but the do it yourself install was worth every penny.

Re: Improvement?

It has been my experience (both car & home audio) that Bose is the King of Midrange. I've had a '91 300ZX TT, '98 SE and now a '03 SE all with Bose systems. Comparing the two Maximas, I thought my '98 had a better sound than my '03. The current stereo seemed flat until I replaced the tweeters. I'm sure there are other brands than Polk that will sound great too. I just went with the Polk because it seemed like an easy swap based on what I read in the Forum. I remember awhile back one of the .org members used Kicker tweets (R13, I think) with success too.

Either way I think replacing the stock tweeters will result in a noticeable improvement. Good Luck.

I installed my polk tweets this weekend and am really happy! I can hear a huge difference in highs now. Definetly worth the few $$ and little amount of install time.

Nice job on the speakers.
How do you get that A pillar off ?
Does it just pull off or do you have to squeeze it
and pry it ?
I want to add some foam tape to fix the squeeking noise
where the pillar meets the dash .

You should apply the foam as per the TSB. Just adding some down there wont get it.

with a large flat head screwdriver, insert at the top, dont pry - just use the screwdriver for grip and pull out toward the other side of the car. For instance, the driver side is pulled out in the direction of the passenger seat. Like at a 45 degree angle between the windshield and door. Once it pops loose on the top and middle snaps, it slides up and twists out.

I finally got around to installing the Polk EX3500 this afternoon in the Bose and like everyone says, it sounds MUCH, MUCH better.

One question though: when cranking up the volume to around 23/24 I notice the tweeters started clipping when playing CDs with a lot of high notes. The treble setting was at +4 but still clipped after lowering to 0. Did this happen to anyone else?

I'm wondering if I did something wrong or perhaps the tweeters need to 'break in'? I realize I'm not going to win any SPL contests with this mod but it still bothers me. In either case, it's still a huge improvement over stock for a relatively cheap investment.

I did notice some clipping at high volume with treble in the + settings.. I have it at -1 now and I still have 10x more highend and no clipping. Of course I have a 2k, so the Bose amp may have changed alittle.

I've installed the Polk tweeters as well, and well satisfied. The one issue is the "sound stage." The voice should come out the center, but it tends to come out of the left tweeter slightly more. The quality and sensitivity match is pretty close, and more information is heard out of the polk. It far out-shines the inferior woofer.
