newbie buying a 2002 Max...

I was rear-ended in a Saab 9-3 about a week ago and it was totalled. I have always liked Maxima's and I'm ready to buy a used one. Before I pull the trigger, I thought I'd look around a bit on this site to see if there is anything I should be aware of...

I am consisdering buying a silver 2002 SE with only 16K miles. A local dealer is selling it for about $18,500. It does not have the Bose sound system or leather seats, but the price seems very good. I'm assuming the low price is because it was bought from Avis (rental company).

Other than the fact that it's been driven by ~100 people, are there any concerns that I should have about buying this car? I'd rather have an GLE but this price seems hard to pass on.

Thanks for any advice,

Tom

Not bad price. I think you have some room to go down though if you shop around. If you are a spirited driver, make sure you get the manual. Auto-tragics are too luxury shifting (slow). I have an automatic, only by necessity since my wife can't drive a stick.

I'd be careful

about buying a rental car. Many of them are abused by the people who rent them. At the very least, get it thoroughly checked out by a good mechanic before you buy it and make sure the dealer will stand behind the warranty. Maybe look into an extended warranty if possible, too.

I considered buying a used 2002 also. There are TONS of them out there with that kind of mileage - just look around. Try to avoid a rental car for obvious reasons.

I had a problem finding one with the equipment I wanted. It seemed that unless I wanted one in "Sunlit Sand" I couldn't find one with a moonroof. Hmmmm..maybe all those WERE rental cars!

Good luck......

dont buy a rental car. my friend took in his s4 for repair work (yeah audi's suck) and they gave him a max. loved the car... but a little too much. he was pulling the ebrake at 60 and constantly going up and down the gated shifter. now thats abuse so dont buy a rental. if it sounds to good to be true then it probably is.. think about it.

watch out for rentals. I thought about buying an ex-rental once but then remembered a few things. I spent the last two years traveling around the states for work. i had a diffrent rental car every week and man if it wasn't F*u*cked already i helped get it there. i know how people treat these cars and it's not nice , just be carefull like everyone else said and get it checked out from head to toe.

In my Opinion i don't think it's worth it and i wouldn't think twice about buying a rental. Just remeber how many fat skinny sweaty nakid etc.. asses and hands have been on and in your car.

ugh.

Have a nice day.

Go to cars.com ... search used 2k2+ maxima w/in 100 miles of your location... there should be over 100 .. most right aroudn that price... best price I've seen yet was $15,900 for a 2k2 max w/ 20k miles.. i'm sure there was something up w/ it.. but that's just the BEST price i've seen. keep shopping... consider new if you can spare the extra $4000 ...

As other folks have said, DON'T buy a rental You hear all kinds of horror stories about what people do to rentals; one guy I heard about was going down the highway at 55, and threw it into reverse to "see what would happen"?!?

Even when I'm using one, it gets redlined, parked anywhere, and generally abused. Beware the rental!
