tire question on 8.5 width rim...

on an 8.5 width rim, what do you guys think would be the WIDEST possible size i could go w/out being in danger. i guess i'd like to avoid rubbing. i was told 235's are good. i was looking at 245 or 255.

can i go 255 safely or is that too much? suggestions and/or opinions greatly appreciated....thanks people

235s can go on a 7.5" rim, so I would think that an 8.5" rim can take quite a bit wider tire, like the ones you said. For a MAxima, though, 8.5" rim width seems kinda high. I would put, at the most, 8.0" wide rims. You gotta consider that the Maxima weighs less than most other 4 door sedans in its size/class.

the rims that i, Y2KevSE and 1Max2NV have are all 8.5 inches wide and we all have 245 tires on them. ive never had a rubbing problem. 255 might work but i cant really tell you much since i have no experience. but rest assured that you'll have no problems with 245 tires.

No they can't. 225 is the widest that can go according to spec, at least for 18"s. What size are we talking about here?

if the stock 7 inch rims come with 225 then i would assume that a 7.5 inch rim can take 235.

looking around on tirerack it looks like some tires say 7.5 are within spec and some dont. so it varies depending on the sidewall i think.

7" rims - 225
7.5" rims - 235
8" rims - 245
8.5" rims - 255

I have never seen 8.5" rims with 255 tires, honestly. But I'm sure it'll fit somehow. What rims are you getting? Pics? Links?

Ummmmmmmmm..........Are you just guessing or did you actually find those numbers somewhere?

There is an acceptable range of wheel widths. There is not just one correct width.

Here's Toyo's chart, but all of the manufacturers charts should be relatively identical.

The middle rim width number is what is recommended, but the entire range is acceptable.

You will notice that the range depends on the wheel size. It looks like 235's are acceptable on a 17 x 7.5, but NOT on an 18 or higher.

Question and answer time!

Are you able to mount a 235 on a 7.5" x 18"? Yes.

Is it recommended? No.

Will your tire's warranty be void if you try this?? Probably.

In theory, could your sidewall split while driving, causing you to drive head-on into a semi-truck, all because they took the advice of an armchair tire "expert" on what they should mount on their car? YES

Hey Polo, a 7.5" rim can acomodate 235, a 8.0"rim 245-255 and a 8.5" 245-255-265. Personally with a 8.5" rim wide I would go with 255 or 265, just my 2 cents.

Good luck

Cheers

Don't make your decision based on TireRack's website. Call for the info. I made the mistake and picked up 7.5" wheels because the site said 235/40's were in spec, but the site is wrong (since confirmed by phone).

Now I've either got to ship the wheels back and pick a 2nd choice on wheels or I'll have to compromise on the tires I wanted.

Anyone in the NJ area interested in BBS RK's at 18x7.5? Never even unpacked LOL

boys and girls, and ladies....

thanx for the info guys. it seems that my *SAFEST* bet would be to get 245's, seeing as we have a few first hand experiences and that beats out "i think" and "i heard" by a couple car lengths

i've gotta talk to where i'm purchasing this combo and see what package they can give me.

again, thanx a bunch. you all get a lollipop if we ever meet...

Hmmm....interesting stuff...I've been thinking of going with wider tires...on H&R springs currently and worried about rubbing with 255's.

I am looking at just getting rims, and those being the spinny wheels and 20's. What would be a good size? 255/40/(zr)20's or you think 245/40/(zr)20's? I think 35 series tire would be too damaging around here. Plus no one has spinny wheels yet here in M.A Dont flame I am trying just to do rims, could care less bout quater mile etc etc...so...wide tires look better, more aggressive, but I do not plan on having those on in winter so the wideness wouldnt matter....

50 made a song bout be, I think its #11 on his cd.

haha thanks in advance guys

Hey Sterling, going 20's will give you a very harsh ride specially if the road are crappy, it like ridding on rim, I would suggest to get the 35 series, as far as going 255 goes, rubbing will arise only if you dont have the proper offset, I think when you go that wide precaution is tha rule.

Good luck.

yea I have only had 205 and 215 before on my older cars but the max has got some big wheel wells. I think I will go with 245's
Also do you need a chamber kit with no drop or thats only needed when you drop? Will the 20's ride "off center," which intails a chamber kit or there is no need for one?

got approved today for the loan on my 03 max 20000.00, really happy.....doesnt have leather, but has everything else I wanted.

Thanks for the info and get back to me on that.

My stock wheels on the Dakota are 16x8, and I have 275/60-VR16's on there right now. It's within spec, and perfectly safe. So the 17x7 Max wheels can only take a maximum of "maybe" 235's? I wasn't aware that one inch made that much of a difference in the tire sizes...

You guys are forgeting to put in ur sidewall numbers. how thick the sidewall is will make a difference. For example, 245/40/R17 will fit on a 7.5 wide wheel, but 245/30/R17 wont fit on that same width wheel, just an example to illustrate the idea....
The best thing is to ask someone reliable, like those techs working at big retail stores.....

So much misinfo and repeating of things they have heard.

As you go bigger in wheels the reason rides tend to be stiffer is not as much the wheel as it is that the sidewall deacreases. For instance with no other changes a 19 with 245 35 would be the same as a 245035 20, the things that make the bigest diff is the tire, and suspension (drop). THe reason to get a camber is to adjust the wheels once you drop it to much that the factory can not handle the adjustment. With that all said I suggest 245-35 20 or 255-35 20, those will fit, you need an offset between 35 and 40, i say around 37 would prob be the best, of course the drop plays a role, if your looking to get a good ride, Eibach and B&G would be the way to go.
