I lost my first original set of key and fob the other day!!! *sniff sniff* Sad sad day. Little over one year of use. Oh well, keys get lost. I called the local dealer yesterday and they quoted me $65 for the y2k transponder keys!!!
The question to the forum is:
1. is that a typical price for the key?
2. can i get those keys from any third party for cheaper?
3. has anyone try programming the car for the new key and is that a major undertaking?
Lastly, anybody know where to get the instructions on reprogramming the car for the new key? The dealer quoted me $70 for the labor. And the fob's, they quoted me $90!!! That's simply outrageous!
Thanks in advance,
albert

Ya... my dealer warned me about not losing them, and quoted a price of around a $100 dollars (the exact price eludes me), for a replacement key...
Apparently, you have to bring them the car before they can make a replacement key... (at least according to him)..
is this true?
Luckily, i still have ALL my keys!!!

PS.. I doubt that it would be profitable for a third party to make these keys, just because I would imagine each car manufacturer has their own proprietary system/keys, and the upfront costs just to get started making these keys would be phenomenal..

That would be fine if you never drove your Maxima anywhere.... just sat in it :-)
Can't really start the car with the keyfob, now can you??
