Swapped my 2k2 MAF for a 2k1....now I have an SES light!

Does anyone know why that might be? Also, I looked inside of both MAF's and there is a difference inside. The 2k2 has an exposed metal wire and on the 2k1 the wire is enclosed inside the plastic housing. There are a few other subtle differences as well.

didn't emax do this awhile back and he didn't have any problems?

When I put mine on the CEL was allready on. So I had no way of knowing it made the CEL come on..

As for it looking differnt, the original 2000-2001 MAFS looks the same inside, the newer TSB version of the 2000-2001 MAFS is slitely differnt looking.

02MaximizedVQ: Did you order your 2K1 MAFS from DAVEB???,Was your SES light on prior to the install???,Is your SES light still on???
emax: Did you install a regular 2001 MAFS or the TSB 2001 MAFS???...
Just wanted to know whats up because I was going to order one from DAVEB and install it on my 2K3 as a somewhat of a safety pre-caution from the "MAFS EPEDEMIC"... when I insatll my FrankenCar intake.

My SES light came back on today, with my stock POS airbox on. The car is running fine. This is ridiculous !

Yes I ordered my MAF from DaveB. I did not have a check engine light when I installed the 2001 MAF. I installed the 2001 MAF, cranked the car and let it run for about 5 minutes, shut it off, and came back about 10 minutes later and immediately when I cranked it up the SES light came on.

Anyway I must have gotten the 2001 "TSB" model b/c the internals are different as I previously stated. If it had been the same I probably would have returned it. The car runs fine with the new MAF. I'll try to clear the code and see if it comes back.

The SES light is on because the 2002-2003 MAF sensors also house an air temperature sensor in them that the 2000-2001's don't. So the MAF sensor is ok, but the SES light is on because of an invalid reading from the intake air temperature. If you go read it with a code reader, the code should be either P0112 or P0113 (IAT Sensor Error). I have a thread about 387923 pages long about the MAF issues with the 2002+.

I talked to a tech at my local dealer who told me this: Nissan knows about the dead MAFs. When they replace it, they not only replace the MAF itself, but they REPROGRAM AND RESET THE ECU. He didn't know what the changes were exactly, but told me that it has helped keep the new MAFs from going bad again.

22680-6N200 (2002 MAF - Defective - Don't use aftermarket intake with this MAF)
22680-6N201 (2002 MAF - Replaced the 22680-6N200 - Needs ECU update in order not to fail with this MAF)
22680-AM600 (2003 MAF - 2003 ECUs already have update, but 2002 ECUs need the update in order not to fail with this MAF)

All of that research leads me to believe that the MAF isn't actually dying (or that the ECU is blowing the MAF - instead of the MAF dying because of excess air/moisture/oil/etc). So until I can find someone with a TSB document (or a Nissan tech who can tell me what they change when reprogramming the ECU), you're taking a chance if you are a 2002. The 2003's have very little cases where the ECU needs updating (or a normal defect in production (1 in 1000)).

Hope this helps.

Intersting, I will have to poke arond the ESM to read up on this. I'm sure Dixit would know all about this too..

As for the "updated 2003 MAFS", my repalcement oem MAFS lasted a total of 2 days.. So I don't think the problem has been fixed.

I'm taking the CEL bulb out of my car, problem solved..

Studman, thanks for the info. How will gas mileage and driveability be affected by not getting a reading from the air temp sensor?

Jesse

PS- on another note, I examined my 2k2 MAF and it wasn't greasy at all after 5,000 miles with an Injen intake.

studman: Thanks for your regarding MAFS.
So all in all would it be wise to purchase a 2001 MAFS??? I still haven't installed my Franken yet. I was going to purchase a 2000-2001 MAFS just as a safety pre-caution but If it's going to throw a SES light then I think I shouldn't purchase one but then again studman said 2003 MAFS have been updated so. But emax also said his OEM replacment died after two days. Is there any type of safety precaution I can take to prevent a SES light to come on???(besides not installing the Franken at all)

All: Stay away from oiled filters on aftermarket intakes. Or if you won't stay away, oil lightly and clean the filter more often. The MAFs are sensitive to oil and moisture (but not condensation... go figure!!).

blubyu2k2: JMS Products Inc. Grilles. They're about $160 for the set plus shipping.

emax95: Did you have the ECU reprogrammed? That's supposed to fix the sensitivity (according to the tech at the dealer - he knew his stuff too). If you just replace the MAF, it'll continue to blow over and over again. The tech told me that he thought that it was the ECU that actually damaged the MAF beyond repair, but only after the ECU saw a voltage higher than it expected. Almost like the ECU sent out a sentinel to kill the MAF so it wouldn't kill the ECU. Welcome to The Nissan MAtriX!

02MaximizedVQ: Milage will be slightly effected (0-2 MPG loss) at most. I haven't researched into why the IAT sensor is there or what it does. The ESM doesn't state why it's needed, which may be why other 2002-2003's can run with the 2000-2001 MAF (and the SES light to match it).

I don't know how a MAF metered car would work without a reading from the air temperature sensor. I thought that was a critical element of the calculation process. Is there a temperature sensor anywhere else in the intake path?

MAFS: MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR
Should you be worried? YES. For more info read studmans post on the first page or do a "SEARCH" regarding the " BLOWN MAFS EPEDEMIC" .....

No updates, the SES light is still on. Car runs great. I wonder how hard it is to remove the SES bulb?

Does anyone think that this new TSB for loss of power that results in a new MAF and reprogrammed ecu might solve the MAF problems that we get with 02 maximas??

Yes I digged this one up.
So I replaced my MAF a few months ago from a 22680-6N200 to a 22680-2Y001. I did transfer the IAT to the new MAF. I did not get the ECU reprogrammed at the time. I just reset the ECU. Now I am popping a P0113 every now and then. I see that the ECU might need to be reprogrammed to handle this new MAF and the code could just be a product of it not being reprogrammed. Also, does anyone know if the MAF actually goes bad or just pops this code if you don't get it reprogrammed?
The car drives fine but would there be an issue with driving around with the code on?
If so, and it does need to be reprogrammed, what reprogramming do you specifically ask for? Or do you just mention you need your ECU reprogrammed because you just changed the MAF?

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm about to replace my MAF. The new one I got has this green dot on it and there's a yellow notice saying I need to re-program my ECU. The thing is I already had this done back in March when I had a blown O2 sensor. Do I need to do it again?

Sorry for reviving this old thread but with so many MAF threads I thought this would be better than creating a new one.

The reason you have a cel with the 01 MAF is because of the IAT. All it is, is the little thermister on the side of your 02 MAF. You need to transfer that over to the 01 MAF and you won't have a problem. Before 02 the intake air temp was a seperate sensor. My 01 MAF is coming up on a year with no problem.

James

EDIT: wow. didnt realize this was started in 2003. I hope his problem is fixed by now.
