Dave at Random Technology needs someone's car for a full day to certify his catalytic converter for use on 5th Gen Maximas. The deal is simple. If the cat fits, he'll sell it to you wholesale. If it doesn't, he'll put your stock cat back on and send you on your way.
Random Technology is located at 4430 Tuck Road, Loganville, GA. Dave can be reached at (770) 554-4242.
This deal is available to just one lucky 5th Gen Maxima owner. Who will it be?

I live near RT in Atlanta. I contacted them last year about a cat for a 5th gen. They told me to come by and they would, basically, grab one off the shelf and make one fit, since they did not have one yet for a 5th gen.
What is the cost?
My only concern, and it really is not a "concern", is that the hi-flow cat does not improve performance, that is why I never pursued it. If it does, I'm game.
I have three vacation days carried over from last year and I'm itchin' to take them.

I don't think there's an advantage to having Dave "make one fit" unless he's going to use it as a template for creating more. After all, the whole idea behind this is to make sure RT has a fitment for all 5th Gen Maximas. Custom designing one just for you wouldn't serve the purpose.
We didn't discuss price. If you're interested in pursuing it, I'd suggest you give Dave another call and reference this thread. See what he has to say. If it makes sense, go for it.

y2kse,
When I spoke to RT, we were speaking of a prototype for the 5th gens in general, and not a one-time fit type thing.
Y2KevSE,
We can't oink like that in these parts, since it is relatively close to the Chattooga (e.g. the river in "Deliverance").

I Tested
I Tested a 1999 RT Cat in my Y2K, It fit but was a 1/4 inch smaller at the flange. Bottom line, the car felt slower and strugled to reach the red line. Put the stock back and $210.00 down the drain.

I was thinking about running a poll over in the 4th Gen forum, but I checked with Nissan and found out that they changed their cat in mid-1999. The early-99 part number is 20800-2Y925. The late-99 and all 5th Gen cats have part number 20800-3Y225. If Nissan incoporated a freer-flowing design into the new cat, comparing your results to those of a 4th Gen might be like comparing apples to oranges.
I think if I was interested in taking my car to RT, I'd specify that their cat not only had to fit my car properly but that it also had to produce quantifiable performance increases over stock roughly equivalent to those posted in their web site. Otherwise I wouldn't be obligated to purchase their cat. That means, of course, that dyno runs would have to be made before and after the install. Where those dyno runs would be conducted and who would pay for them is a matter of negotiation. But I might try to work something out so that RT would pay for the dyno runs if their cat didn't result in any significant performance increases and we'd split the cost of the dyno runs if it did.
Watcha think, mdeal? Still up for it?
