I've been toying with the idea of moving to AZ for quite some time now. I currently live in CT. Besides driving there, I've been trying to dig up other options. I had my hopes up on Amtrak, but they only transport cars to Florida. The other option is via semi-truck.
I figure that I would spend roughly $200 in gas, and another $300 on hotels along the way (3 day drive, I think). So, I am willing to spend $500+ to transport.

Anyone done this before and have any advice?

I've had a car transported to AZ when I moved there from NY (cruel fate made me come back to NY, but that's another story). Anyway, I don't remember that many details but I do remember the car did suffer some body damage and I understand this happens frequently. If i remember more later I'll post a again.

If you're moving to AZ, then you're going to need a moving truck such as U-Haul or something right? If so, then why don't you just also rent a trailer, and tow your Max on the trailer with the U-Haul truck?

Re: Best way to transport car across country?
I've shipped two cars in the last year. It cost about $800 to ship east coast to west. First time the driver took great care of the car. Second time the bumpers got scratched and dented. If you've ever seen a car transport you'll notice that the cars are nose to tail. Any mis-judgement and you have a problem. Also, they take a beating on the front and rear underside valance as they move cars around during transport.

If I shipped again I would forget about price as a decision making tool. I would ship with a company that owns the truck doing the transport. I would take complete photos prior to leaving and same at arrival. And check to make sure that you are not responsible for a $500 deductible should there be damage.

I just looked at U-Haul, and for there smallest truck, they want $2254. Too much. I really don't need a U-Haul, as I only have a few possesions I will be trasporting, such as laptop, clothes, etc.... Nothing big or bulky. My best bet is driving there, probably.

Just curious are you worried about putting miles on your car? Or is it that you just don't want to have to do the driving yourself because of the expenses you may incur along the way?

If you're not worried about putting miles on your car, why don't you just try to hire someone (hopefully someone you trust, or a transport service) to drive your car to your new place for you?

It was just a suggestion.
Good Luck

I'd load it down with as much stuff as I could, ship the rest, and make a vacation out of it. It's not often you'll get to see some cool stuff in the middle of the country so leave a week early and make a few stops/detours along the way.

You might ask a friend if s/he would drive with you. A friend of mine moved to florida and I drove down with him and flew back by myself. That trip was a BLAST! Think about it.

I say drive. I am planning my move to Hawaii in August, and considering the $$$$$$ to transport it across the US, then get on a frighter to Hawaii, it seems ot be a better idea to drive. And also it would be nice to take a cross country trip.
To ship door to door, with insurance and all the other stuff comes to about $1900-2000. If i drive and let it go in Long Beach it would only be $800.

If you transport, make sure there are no cars above yours incase if any of them leak oil. That's some advice my cousin got when he had his car transported.

Thanks everyone for replying. It seems that transporting on a Semi-truck can be pretty shady. Definetly will take the driving route, worried about speeding tickets the most

sorry to any women who might take offense, but if you think like a woman (like my wife, anyway) you can justify buying a radar detector and say "just look at all the money I saved on tickets!"

Find a nice young lady, and make a road trip of it. You may have to break the no eating in the max rule.

Every friend of mine who have had a car shipped has had some lingering hint of damage.

meet some .orgers along the way. So far I havent met any .orgers I didnt really like in my travels. Pretty odd, not a big fan of people in general, but I was glad I've met all that I have from this forum. Pick some places to stay over night and let us know here. May or may not work schedule wise, but worth trying.

Heck, even Russ isnt half as annoying in person.. I know, hard to believe
