Greddy Evo Catback Installed

Thanks to the help of Juice and his friend I had a Greddy Evo Catback installed a few days ago. The installation took about an hour and was fairly straight foward. We also threw a testpipe (from Custommaxima) on while the car was on the lift. The pipe on the muffler section was very close to the frame of the car and would hit it on certain bumps. I was able to "fix" that by putting some heat resistant material between the pipe and frame. I also used adjustable hose clamps on the rubber part that the exhaust hangers attach to. I tightened up the hose clamps a little and it adjusted the pipes perfectly.

On initial startup I was very suprised. Although it was louder than stock, it was quiet, almost to quiet. I was told that it would get a little louder over time, and it did. The noise level is still very acceptable to me, I actually like it. It does sound somewhat louder on acceleration but is quiet at cruising speeds. In case this is important to anyone I'm 35 years old and mostly drive with two kids in the back seat.

Performance was noticeably but not drastically improved in the mid to upper rpm range.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, I was shocked when I saw the size of the exhaust tip on the muffler. It's a grapefruit shooter!!!

Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Thanks for the help Juice.

Get a Y-pipe and you'll have yourself too much noise. Unless of course you're into that like me

I plan on waiting for the headers. I'm a little worried about that. Would wrapping the Y pipe with that DEI exhaust wrap help with the noise level at all?

Not from the back of the car [noise], just insulate the sound a little from the inside.

I was just wondering if theres a greddy catback system also for the 2k2's and 2k3's. Custommaxima has em' for the 2k2 n 2k3's. Is there an application out for them ? Thanks.

I don't have a digital camera so I don't know if I can post pics. I'll try and borrow one from a friend. I will say the muffler looks fairly large. Some of the guys that have this system use a Stillen rear valence which hides the the muffler nicely. I think it would look much better like that. If you do a search you'll find pictures with the Greddy Evo and the Stillen rear valence. I believe Emax has done this, so you might want to check his posts or homepage.

The Greddy Evo Catback that I just installed is for the 2k3. It is the same part number as 99+ catback. I'm at a friend house right now and can't remember the name of the company, AEI or AIE, but they will sell you the 99+ Greddy Evo Catback for $500 shipped to the lower 48 states if you mention maxima.org. I'll post more info and the link when I get back to my house.

Wise choice, id wait for the headers as well. I dont know if they will punch out the #'s stillen claims they will 35hp and 40tq but im sure they will give a significant boost u can feel. Wraping the y-pipe does somewhat decrease noise from the inside because when I had my stock muffler and everything else was changed it sounded pretty much stock. Thats til I got that damn magnaflow muffler in and now all u hear is a deep not, too deep to tell u the truth. Hey Steve if ur really into the noise that much why dont we switch mufflers? Since urs seems to make less noise then mine, and u just said u like the noise.

Beauty is in the eye . . . or in this case, ear . . . of the beholder.

FWIW, I heard a Greddy exhaust with a Cattman Y-pipe up close and personal. And it was WAY too loud for me.

From what I picked up here on the org, the Y pipe by itself is not the actual culprit when it comes to noise. It's the combination of afetrmarket Y, aftermarket B, and afermarket muffler, that work together to produce absolute mayhem. So, wrapping the Y will be just a minor bandaid. If you get headers to compliment your catback, lookout Your best bet to reduce noise would be too put a resonator on your B pipe, and maybe put that 2K muffler you had back on. Hope you still have it.

That's exactly what I ended up doing, DW. The result is perfect for me . . . plenty of mayhem at WOT but no droning otherwise. I can actually conduct a conversation without having to raise my voice when I'm cruising between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. Try that with a Y-pipe, B-pipe, straight-through muffler combo.

You're 100% correct about that, and no1 could argue with u on that. A b-pipe with a res, and the 2k muffler. U cant feel and diff in power and the noise diff is like day and night. Im gonna go back to that setup ASAP! This muffler is driving me nuts toooo damn deep....

I've kept my stock exhaust part, including 2k3 muffler, in case the noise gets to crazy.

I'm pretty sure juice has a y pipe, b pipe, and aftermarker muffler(remus) on his 2k2 max, and it sounded fine to me. juice, correct me if i'm wrong. any chance the noise levels are a little better on the VQ35?

Anyway, here's the link to AIE

http://www.aieonline.com/index.htm?484

Mention maxima.org and they'll sell you the Greddy Evo Catback, for 99+ max's for $500 shipped to the lower 48 states.

Good thinking.

This is the reason I strongly recommend that people who have or are going to purchase Y-pipes NOT purchase pre-fabricated catbacks. First, EVERY pre-fab catback on the market is overpriced. Second, you don't have much in the way of options if some aspect of a pre-fab catback dissatisfies you.

So what do I recommend? Find a reputable muffler shop and let them build a custom exhaust for you. Make changes SLOWLY. Begin by modifying the front of your exhaust first (i.e., the Y-pipe) and proceed through to the rear of your exhaust (i.e., the muffler). Take it from someone who's tried just about every exhaust combination available on a Maxima. You'll save a lot of time, money and aggravation if you do.

Thanks for helpin' out, I have a 2k3 in search of a full cat back system. JIC magic had em til they updated their website and now they don't have a full race cat back system application for it, An alternative would be Greddy Evo. Along w/ RT cat, whichever best Y pipes and headers available, and injen intake w/ an apexi intake. Can't wait. Thanks for replyin back, enjoy your exuast !!
