Greddy Evo Catback Installed
Thanks to the help of Juice and his friend I had a Greddy Evo Catback installed a few days ago. The installation took about an hour and was fairly straight foward. We also threw a testpipe (from Custommaxima) on while the car was on the lift. The pipe on the muffler section was very close to the frame of the car and would hit it on certain bumps. I was able to "fix" that by putting some heat resistant material between the pipe and frame. I also used adjustable hose clamps on the rubber part that the exhaust hangers attach to. I tightened up the hose clamps a little and it adjusted the pipes perfectly.
On initial startup I was very suprised. Although it was louder than stock, it was quiet, almost to quiet. I was told that it would get a little louder over time, and it did. The noise level is still very acceptable to me, I actually like it. It does sound somewhat louder on acceleration but is quiet at cruising speeds. In case this is important to anyone I'm 35 years old and mostly drive with two kids in the back seat.
Performance was noticeably but not drastically improved in the mid to upper rpm range.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, I was shocked when I saw the size of the exhaust tip on the muffler. It's a grapefruit shooter!!!
Overall, I'm very satisfied.
Thanks for the help Juice.

FWIW, I heard a Greddy exhaust with a Cattman Y-pipe up close and personal. And it was WAY too loud for me.

From what I picked up here on the org, the Y pipe by itself is not the actual culprit when it comes to noise. It's the combination of afetrmarket Y, aftermarket B, and afermarket muffler, that work together to produce absolute mayhem. So, wrapping the Y will be just a minor bandaid. If you get headers to compliment your catback, lookout
Your best bet to reduce noise would be too put a resonator on your B pipe, and maybe put that 2K muffler you had back on. Hope you still have it.

I can actually conduct a conversation without having to raise my voice when I'm cruising between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. Try that with a Y-pipe, B-pipe, straight-through muffler combo.

I've kept my stock exhaust part, including 2k3 muffler, in case the noise gets to crazy.
I'm pretty sure juice has a y pipe, b pipe, and aftermarker muffler(remus) on his 2k2 max, and it sounded fine to me. juice, correct me if i'm wrong. any chance the noise levels are a little better on the VQ35?
Anyway, here's the link to AIE

Mention maxima.org and they'll sell you the Greddy Evo Catback, for 99+ max's for $500 shipped to the lower 48 states.

This is the reason I strongly recommend that people who have or are going to purchase Y-pipes NOT purchase pre-fabricated catbacks. First, EVERY pre-fab catback on the market is overpriced. Second, you don't have much in the way of options if some aspect of a pre-fab catback dissatisfies you.
So what do I recommend? Find a reputable muffler shop and let them build a custom exhaust for you. Make changes SLOWLY. Begin by modifying the front of your exhaust first (i.e., the Y-pipe) and proceed through to the rear of your exhaust (i.e., the muffler). Take it from someone who's tried just about every exhaust combination available on a Maxima. You'll save a lot of time, money and aggravation if you do.
