Wheels and tires

Hi! I have a Nissan Maxima SE 2000. I plan on replacing the orginial bridgestone potenza re92 (225/50-17)on them.

I am getting a really good deal on the Dunlop SP Sport A2 (215/55-16), and would like to have these tires installed. However, is is true that I will need to get my wheels also replaced since the size of the RE92 is 17, and the size of the Dunlop's are 16?

It sounds logical that I will have to replace the wheels with a smaller size, but I just wanted to double check with all the gurus here since I don't know much about cars.

Thanks a lot!

yes. A 215/55/16 tire will require a 16" wheel.

Why do you want to go to a even skinner tire and a small wheel diameter? You are only going to take away from your performance.
Plus, it maybe a shorter wheel. You may have a speedo error.

the 16" size you speak of (215/55/16) is standard issue on the SE Maximas of your year, so your speedo won't be off. However, you've got the optional 17" wheels, so it's probably best to stick to 225/50/17. Otherwise, You will have to replace your rims with 16" ones if you go down, like someone said. Also, a handy little tool to calculate speedo error is here...
