Question - What is a CAT?

I asked this in the "Rotten Egg Smell" topic and no one answered. I did a search on "CAT" and got 728 results (no way I am going through all of those) and then searched "What is CAT" and got the same number of results.

I just basically want to know what it is and how can it harm the vehicle. I just got the rotten egg smell last night (2k3 SE 6sp) and was wondering what would happen if I didn't bother getting it "fixed". Thanks guys.

Wow. Thanks a lot. Seems so easy to figure out AFTER you know find out what it is. Thanks again.

So, now that I know what it is, I still don't know how it will affect the car if I don't get it fixed. Any ideas? My guess is that it won't affect the car at all - just the pollution (not to discount that, pollution is very serious).

Nope, just trying to freak you out!!!

Actually I thought if I DEMONSTRATED how fast things can be found by searching here and on the internet as a whole, maybe, just maybe people will do it more often.
