I have the base system (non-bose) as well. I don't mind the head unit, and would like to keep the full functionality of the steering wheel controls. So, keeping that in mind, for about $271.50 total plus S&H I'd get the following through Ebay:
Image Dynamics Sub for $21.50 It fits in an a sealed enclosure of 0.5 to 1 cubic foot.
Power Acoustik 800W 4 Channel Amp for $129 (Accepts high/low level input)
Power Acoustik 2 WAY MOUNT TWEETERS 180 WATTS for $21 (I had these in my truck, sounded awesome)
POLK EX SERIES II EX602A 6 1/2" COAXIAL (There are 2 sets of these speakers on Ebay for $50 a pair) I picked these speakers out of the blue, I'm sure others can recommend better.
Also, add in another $50 or so for materials such as wiring and wood to make the box for the sub.

I know it's not a Maxima, but my buddy has a new Diamante in which he installed an HU and amps but left the stock speakers. I'm not very impressed and would recommend against it.
For $300, I'd get a two channel amp and some 6.5's for the front. Pioneer makes some decent low-buck speakers, and RF amps are pretty low cost too. You could get a RF 200S (75w x 2 and accepts speaker level inputs) for under $200 and then maybe 6.5" Pioneer or RF components for around $120. Might be a good combo fot your budget.

That sub started out at $21.50. It will probably close in the neighborhood of $50+.
I have the stock headunit with aftermarket speakers and sub. It sounds great.

Re: Re: amplifier with stock speakers
I think I am gonna get a amplifier for my stock speakers. Do you loose the audio controls on the steering wheel if you get an aftermarket HU? I was just gonna let the HU on the stock system run the front tweeters and than get a 4 way amp to run to the front and rear doors. I think the speakers are fine whether or not there bose. Obviously bose would be better but I aint gonna sweat it, I think nakamichi makes good sound qaulity, check those speakers out.

Lose the factory headunit if you want clear crisp sound at a loud level... and yes you will lose the steering wheel controls... Oh well, use the remote for the aftermarket HU,,, and also I got a JVC KD-Sh77 HU, and JVC sells an option accesorry that can make my steering wheel control work again, its like $80 bucks... I am thinking of buying it...
