Upgrading tires-Need sizing help

Okay I'm finally getting rid of the OEM tires and I'm upgrading to the Sumitomo HTR+'s. These appear to be equal or better in the snow than the Michelin Pilot Sports, and they're cheaper. My question is what size is accurate?

Tirerack says I should get 235/45/17, but according to a size calculator it says the 245/45/17 is closer to the stock tire size (only .7% faster).

Also these tires are supposedly made for 7.5-9.0 rims with the recommended width at 8.0. Will they fit well on our 7" width rims?

What happens when I upgrade the rims, will the tires fit well on another set of 17 x 7 rims or will I need to move up to 17 x 7.5 rims?

That tire size calculator is accounting for the radius and not the width. 245 is way to wide for a 7" wide wheel. Like JJS said, 'FAQ time'.

Ohhhh! Okay, I understand.
BTW, when you say FAQ Time you might want to specify FAQ (top of the page) from MAX FAQ (on home page)
Thanks for the help though.

If you are choose between those two sizes. Get the 235/45/17. Those will fit the x7.0 width of a rim. 245/ is just too wide. There are a lotta arguements saying that ppl with stock 17x7 rims should get 225/... and not 235 cuz it's wider. But don't worry just get the 235. You should be fine even if you take corners hard.

The new thing will be "Look up the FAQ". Not to get OT here, but c'mon guys, if people didn't ask the same questions periodically, this forum would have 1 to 2 posts a day. Cut people some slack.

I thought the OEM tire size was 225/50/17...what would be the advantages of going with something that's not so radically different?

Wider and lower profile tires increase handling and stability.
