Another Ignition Coil Thread (long)

I just got home from the dealership because i went down to see about my transmission slipping and my ignition coils..First the tranny..My fluid isnt red anymore, more of a dark, dark brown color and the 2nd to 3rd shift is really slipping bad. They told me i needed to make an appointment and the guy who goes on the test drives was busy so i couldnt take anyone for a ride. Since im going back to school in a week im not gonna have time to address this problem now so it will wait till summer. Now, the ignition coils. First i ask the service manager have they had any maximas in for ignition coils and he looks at me and goes "God yes". So i tell him what my symptoms are and he says yeah sounds like the coils but the only problem is that we cant do them unless the CEL comes on because we need to pull the code before we can do them. Also, alot of people been asking which warranty they are under, i was told its the 3yr/36k warranty which is over for me and they want over 350 for just the coils without labor....So basically im SOL with the coils besides payin for em.
On a different note, they had 2 2k4 maximas on the lot and i took a good look at em. They arent that bad in person but they are very different, i think thats just because im so used to what the older models look like....

Laterz,
Steve

That's funny. I had my ignition coils replaced today under warranty. The service advisor told me I was still covered under the 3yr/50,000 mile warranty. I never heard of that. And if I wasn't it would've been $350.

I think the coils are under the powertrain warrenty.

My coils go bad (sometimes) but other times they work. I unplugged them one night and notice there was some moisture in them. I towel wiped the and left the sit out to dry. It seems to have cured it for now, but I'm still wanting to replace them when the weather is warmer.

Well, will the powertrain work if they are not in the engine? No? Do they help to make spark? Yes! That means they generate a form of energy (AKA power). Well, that means they are part of the powertrain. Hence, "power"-train.

If you say it exactly like that (like you're talking to a two year old), then they "might" get the point. If not, then them over the head and talk to the next guy up in the chain of command.

who, most likely, will side with his subordinate and you'll still be out of luck.

Max2000 is absolutely right. Everything depends on the dealer. Make an enemy of the dealer and you'll get bupkis. Make a friend of the dealer and they'll bend over backward to keep you happy.

FYI, I had all 6 of my coils replaced without a CEL ever coming on and before the TSB was issued. Ya think maybe my dealer went to bat for me with NNA? Ya think maybe establishing a good relationship with my Service Writer might have had something to do with it?

Actually, I hope no one took that threat of violence seriously

It shouldn't have to be up to us to get these dealers to do their damn jobs, though! It's absolutely ridiculous! We paid for a service and got a contract/warranty, and they are pussyfooting around trying to say that the coils are not part of the powertrain! I mean, come on! If they tried that on me, I'd point out the I'm aware of the problems/issues with the coils, I know there is a TSB on them, and I also know that the coils are part of the powertrain b/c they are one of the primary components in making the car run. Is the ECU powertrain, or just another useless electronic doodad that happens to make the engine run? It's not hard to figure out what's going on. They are abusing their positions as dealers/service managers, and trying to play us as fools! You can take that if you want, but no way in hell am I going to get screwed without at least me getting to talk dirty to them! If you let them walk over you, they will continue to do so unless FORCED otherwise! That's the way most of the Nissan dealers are right now. Let me ask you this...does Infiniti do the same thing to their customers? Hell no they don't!! What's the difference between the I30 and the Maxima (when they're both loaded to the hilt)? They are 98%+ the same friggin car!

If you walk into your dealership with a chip on your shoulder, don't be surprised if they decide to knock it off.

I don't let my dealership push me around. I'm insistent that they deal with the problems I bring to their attention. But I'm ALWAYS polite and courteous. And I ALWAYS do my homework first. Remember, the people you deal with aren't as fanatical about their automobiles as you and I are. To most of them it's just a job. And anything you can do to make their jobs easier is appreciated.

I can assure you from numerous personal experiences that knowing your facts and employing courteous persistence will get you much further than anger ever will.

Being nice works sometimes, I totally agree. I guess it's more the feel of the situation that calls for the attitude you should deliver. If they just blow me off, I'll give them one more chance (read: I'm being nice) to get it right. If it happens a second time, I break out the facts in a very blunt manner. They can take it however they like, but I always get what I want when it comes to things like this. It may be a bad trait I picked up from my mother, but it damn sure works every time (for me). They continue to blow me off or waver, I press the issue. We just have different methods, but the end result is the same. I'm not out to make friends at the dealerships in these situations, I'm just there to make sure they do the job correctly.

The funny part about all this is, my Nissan dealer is one of the BEST when it comes to service. They might be a bit slow, but at least they are honest and do it right the first time. I'm actually drawing from my Ford experiences (which were ok until I purchased my '99 CSVT).
