Saw a 2002 with daytime running lights.

I saw a 2002 Maxima with daytime running lights with a Canadian plate. Is there a way that we can have this for US cars, maybe with a xenon dual filament bulb?

Canadian Maximas have different wiring that runs the high beams at half power(actually they turn them on/off really fast, which kills the bulbs faster).

You can do it, but why? I've seen aftermarket devices that do this.

The daytime running lights are no biggie, I want to wire my fogs up for daytime as well.... Apparently my fogs go off when I push my high beams on at night also, sux...

I saw a very good website devoted to just modding howtos for the maxima, it had lots of different wiring mods in there.. very descriptive.. I beleive there was one to give US cars daytime (lows) running lights... But why???

I dunno why either. You should drive will ALL your lights on ALL the time. The only car I've ever owned that did this was a 1990 Honda Accord EXR (Canadian). When you released the handbrake, all the lights came on full strength. Too bad they stopped doing this.

in Canada it is the law to have daylight running lights on ALL cars I believe..

Also, if you want daylight running lights...why not just turn them on when you start your car? It's not that big of a hassle...

i know...nissan made that standard on the max. now that I have HID in the fogs, I always think twice before flashing my high beams. Now that sucks... My sister drove my car and she flashes my high beams.

oh well!

DRLs suck!!

With more and more cars having DRLs, there's now a sea of headlights which hides the motorcycles!! Motorcycles have a hard enough time being noticed as it is!! Now their headlights blend right in with the other traffic.

And no, loud pipes DON'T save lives, they just tick people off. I want to be noticed on my cycle, but I'm not going to wear one of those lame-o orange vests either!

I won't purchase any GM vehicle just for that reason - they have them on every damn car!!

Also, people have enough trouble changing their light bulbs on their cars - now I see cars with DRLs that have one side burned out...great that's effective...

Motorcycles have options to get noticed:
1)Flasher for headlamp as a DRL.
2)HID retrofit kit.
3)Aftermarket HID driving lamps like the Sylvania Xenarc.
4)LED flashers for the rear that activate with brake lamps.

No need for the orange vest!!!

1) Those are more annoying than the DRLs! (about $40-50 I think too)

2) $$$Cha-ching$$$

3) I already have a brighter than normal bulb - anything larger is a major draw on the cycle (weak charging system when compared to a car obviously).

4) Those little LED flashers aren't cheap either considering what they consist of! If I had a big dresser bike I'd consider it, but they look pretty lame on a sportier cycle.

I have a hard top case/trunk with a high mounted brake light so that helps out too.

1)Annoying, but NOTICEABLE. I'll notice that damn pulsing before I even see a bike.
2)$100-$400 which is peanuts compared to laying your bike down, because some old lady or jackazz pulls out infront of ya.
3)They are HID and only use 35W. I'm not sure about "crotch" bike alternators, but the alternators in newer bikes are damn near car capacity. I'm into BMW bikes and they will support heated hand grips, electric vest, and SUPERB lighting with plenty of spare juice.
4)$30-40 and I like that they are small, but man if you are behind someone with these they are friggen bright. I've been working on a way to tie a pair into my 3rd brake light and mount them on the license plate lights. If someone rear ends you with them bright SOB, then they are DRUUUUUNK!

I can think of lots of other reasons to NOT buy a GM vehicle..

Just wear the orange vest - no one will laugh at you.

I rather see DRLs on vehicles.....some people don't pay attention when driving long distances and veer into the wrong lane, when passing in two lane traffic, and when driving into the direction of the sun. I know you motorcyclist have a hard enough time as it is with unattenitive drivers, but it is the best option for safety.

By the way, I run my aftermarket driving lights and my headlights, my car didn't come with DRLs, it is an 86. And sometimes I turn off the headlights and just run the driving lights. It is just for safety.

I hate DRLs. If you can't see another car coming towards you in the middle of a clear day, your sorry a$$ shouldn't be on the road to begin with!

My 2k Max automatically turns the lights off when I remove the key (no matter what position they're in). If you want the DRL's, just keep your lights switch in the ON position at all times. When you remove your key, they'll go off & turn on autoamtically when you start the car.

Personally, I don't like the DRL's.

It is my opinion that DRL's are lame. God! I hate seeing them in camrys. Makes you feel old and like an unsafe driver that others need to notice. Why the heck do you need DRL's. The sun is freaking shining, aint it?
The day Nissan put those things in maxima's i am out. How about a Porshe 911C w/DRL's?

Daytime runninglights serve two purposes up here in Canada.

First cars tend to blend in the snow, especially when they are all dirty and salt caked, they look the same (sort of) colour as the same dirty salt stained roads, plus the glare of the white snow even when overcast cuts down your vision considerably.

Second, we get long blinding sunsets around the fall equinox that last most of the winter and you cannot, even with sunglasses see S**t... (yes 8 hours of sunlight sux).. Then throw the glare of the snow in with the sunset and you are pretty much blind. Anyone that lives up here can attest to this. When we have guests visiting that live in the US if we're going somewhere around 4pm or 5pm they usually always comment on the blinding sunsets...

A few times I've been driving in conditions such as this and past oncoming cars that I didn't see because they were older and didn't have DRL standard equipment..

plus who gives a crap if you have lights on, its not like your outside the car to see them yourself??

But what happens if you had the need to be stealthy...DRLs would give you away.

I know in NJ Drivers Manual....when you are parked in a residential neighborhood, you are supposed to turn off your headlights and use parking lights (this is so you dont shine your lights into someones home)

Well, thats the law...but then Toyota sells cars with DRLs standard....

DRLs work, plain and simple. All vehicles manufactured for the Caandian market after Dec 1, 1989 had to come equiped with them. The benefit is the ability to differentiate a vehicle from the background and this benefit is especially noticeable on darker, cloudy days. The people who say they are annoying are the same people who stare into on coming headlights at night. This also helps eliminate the problem with idiots who don't turn on their lights in fog, snow, rain, etc.

Not impossible, but highly improbable. There is no factory installed on/off switch for the DRL's. Every new car in Canada has to have them (since 1989 as someone else posted). If you are noticing cars without them, they are either older cars (likely) or the owners have disabled the system (unlikely) or there is a fault in the system (possible). Certain cars, like Grand Caravans or Montanas) use the marker lights in greater brightness for the DRL's, as there is no stipulation that the lights have to be white or high beams at half strength or low beams at full strength etc etc. The lights only have to meet a certain level of brightness, I believe.
