2K2/2K3 DTE (distance to empty)

Just curious....when you guys fill up your gas tank, what does the trip computer DTE reset to ?

I just recently filled up the tank on my six speed and it reset to 371 miles (DTE).

When I fill-up, the DTE reads anywhere between 340 to 380. But when it comes down to the bottom line, I get around 300 miles on 16 gallons for approx. 18.9 miles to the gallon (mostly city mileage).

the DTE is way off. it usually tells me i have 30 miles left to empty when in reality i have about 3 or 4 gallons left (65-70 miles or so)

i the DTE recalculates the distance after you start driving (i think its like a third of a mile) so how high the DTE resets to is really dependent on how you drive in that 1/3 mile.

Mine is typically around that number (37X).

It is also based on the trip computers MPG, i filled up the other day and mine was at 420 miles. Normally its about 360 or so and I know I'm not getting but about 17-18 mpg, the 02/03's drink!

Yeah....I hear what you guys are saying. The trip computer if definitely off. I only average between 18 - 20 mpg. I also noticed that when the gas light comes on and the DTE starts flashing, I still have at least 4 gallons left in my tank. Also when I fill up, the gas gauge goes past "F" (full).

I have to say I'm pretty pleased with my MPG. I have an '03 SE auto and my previous vehicle was a Nissan Frontier 2wd 4 cyl 5spd and my Max bests it by 3-5 mpg. Btw, I've noticed mine resets to 370-380.

I would KILL for 260 city. I get less than 200, then again i only have 4K on my 02 with a frankencar, and for those who have an intake, we all know why our gas mileage SUCKS!

Mine says 340 dte... and I drive till about 40 dte and my Trip meter only says 230 thats all city driving... 20.5 mpg on the meter also...

today I had it at 18 dte!!!!!!!! it was blinking and the gas light was on and I was about 3 miles from the nearest gas station (negligence on my part)... needless to say the car made it there, I had it on cruise control at 60mph on the highway and on city streets I cruised at 30... the dte said 20 when I got to the gas station.. I paid $27 to fill it, and now the gauge is not all the way full.. it stopped right below F, maybe its used to being low all the time!

Re: 2K2/2K3 DTE (distance to empty)

The DTE is dependent on your driving habits and the gas you use. When I go home to Orlando, i pull about 320 on the DTE meter. This is when i fill up with non-reformulated gas. In miami here, i pull 295 with reformulated gas. Also, here is alot more stop and go driving. Whereas at home its alot of constant speed. The computer looks at the previous gas mileage you had and makes the estimate like that. If you drive ur car like a grandma for a tank of gas, then fill up. DTE will read much higher than if you drive with your foot on the floor for a tank then refill.

yeah i noticed it that but u have to cut it some slack if u check on slopes and slants cuz the gas in ur tank will go to one side and then u cant get an accurate measure also notice how long every single mile seems to last when they say ur near empty

This is a 2k3 6 speed

My MPG right shows 27.7....HAH yea right.

It's more like 23 MPG right now.

Just a thought....shouldn't all of our DTEs be almost exactly the same right after a fill up at the gas station (before driving the car). Except maybe a slight difference between autos & 6 speeds ?? and depending on whether you top off the tank or not ??

I have a 01 max and last week i got 430. The gas light came on around 370 for me and drive it for about 60 miles more. Filled up and put 17.5 gallons in. I had about 20~25 more miles in there. I was definitely suprised. I ususally average 25mpg. Mine is manual by the way.

I've gotten the DTE to reset to 462 at one point, and if I start hittin the highway quick enough, I start to add up the odometer reading and the DTE. My goal is to see if I can hit the 500 mark as claimed by Nissan.. Lately, I've been keepin my acceleration to a minimum... easing on the gas, never going above 3K rmp (Its so hard with the quick throttle response). The short commute to work helps keep me from refilling every week. $27 every 1.5 weeks sounds fairly decent to me... better than the once a week $25 fillup I used to have.

If you live in a dense urban area where there are alot of cars (ex: miami, houston, etc...) gas companies reformulate the gas with methanol and oxygenates in it to reduce emissions. Unfortunately, doing this makes the fuel like 10-12% less efficient when it burns. You get 10-12% less distance per tank. Non reformulated gas it just normal gasoline.

UCF, i take it by ur handle that you live in orlando. So do i when I'm not at school. The gas we use up there is 1000000000000x better than the reformulated ****water I get down in miami.

I do this as well in my 2K2 6spd. I always reset the trip meter when I fill up and then add the distance I have traveled to the DTE to see how high I can get it. The highest "sum" that I have gotten too is about 930km (578mi). This peak point usually occurs for me about when the gas gauge is between 3/4 and 1/2 a tank. I find that once the gas gauge gets below this point, the sum starts to drop. The farthest distance I have gotten out of a tank is only 720km (447mi), but I have never gone a full tank with only highway driving. I think that I could for sure get 800km (500mi) on a long road trip, but I haven't been able to test this theory yet. BTW, I am VERY easy on the gas pedal compared to most people on the org......I always shift around 2500 RPM's unless I am in a hurry. Plus the wife always yells at me if I get on the gas too hard.

When I fill up, where the DTE resets to depends on the kind of driving I was doing before I filled up. The highest I have seen it reset to is 730km (453mi) and the lowest is 450km (280mi).
