Do chrome rims really get damaged in winter?

I don't want to purchase chrome rims if I have to swap them out each season ... anyone w/ chrome's in the midwest or other winter-burdened parts of the country that have left them on through the year?

thanks in advance, and sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum

I live in NY and this past snow store was bad, as long as you wash the rims and get the salt off them as soon as possible you should be fine. After each show fall I went to the car wash and they cleaned up just fine. Also you may want to get thisproduct and put it on your rims : http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...x/wheelwax.jsp

Yes they do affect it. 2 people I know stated that there chrome started flaking after all the salt they laid done here in B'more. The shocking thing is Allstate honored one of there claims and they gave him enough money that he went from 16's to 19's and Giovanni's.

Chrome

I haven't cleaned my rims for over a month in snow and salt, and they seemed to clean up just fine. There are some spots in the corners, but I'll get them myself when it gets warmer.
Good luck.
Chrome are high maintenance, and: "chrome might not get you home, but it could get you laid." hheehe

The salt does eat chrome.. and aluminum rims will eventually get mangled as well... You probably won't notice for a season or two, but they will inevitably look like crap in a few years... If your driving in those conditions I highly suggest you pick up some steel rims and snow tires for the winter. It costs more to begin with but in the long run you WILL be much happier, you can buy some fancy chrome rims & performance tires.. plus save money on insurance claims!
