Premium or regular

Hi,
Is regular ok?
My manual says that regular is ok but it recommends premium for better performace.
I was wondering what anyone else thinks

Use premium. Helps prevent enging pinging, injector problems (I think), and gets you better gas mileage.

Even though I live in one of those 'high altitude' places (Colorado) and it says I can put regular in, I still put premium in. If you were hungry you wouldn't want a cheesburger when you could have a big mac.

A better analogy would be a McDonalds cheeseburger to Outback Steakhouse.

Well, I still don't get this one.

How much more is premium vs. regular? Around here, it's 10 cents. If you drive 20,000 miles a year @ 20mpg, that's $100/year. $8.50 per month.

Hardly a great expense. How much is your cable or cell phone bill?

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. To me, it's peanuts to get the most out of my Max...

btw, who likes the "aussie cheese fries" at Outback? (nothing french about those fries!)

I only ever put Sunoco Ultra 94 in mine. I've had to put 91 three times and even 89 ONCE and boy can you feel a difference.

As two people put it, 1) The long term price difference is negligeable and 2) if you buy a 24-27K USD vehicle, don't freaking cheap out on the gas. That's like buying a fancy 50 dollar dinner in a fine restaurant and drinking water instead of wine because you don't want to fork out another few bucks. (I don't like comparing my Max to a Big Mac or an Outback burger )

I did a simple calculation, dont waste your money with regular. Here's a simple calculation:

$20 for gas
$2 for regular - 10 gals
$2.20 for prem - 9.01 gals

Assume you get 18 mpg for regular, and 20 for premium.

Do the math, each will get you 180 miles. Now why kill the performance of your car

I just filled up for $1.739 a gallon for Ammoco Ultimate at BP. Since the war, our prices have gone down for some reason.
I usually get Sunoco because I have their card that saves me 4% on each purchase. BP, Shell, and Speedway/Superamerica have some credit cards too. I applied for the Speedway, but they didn't get back to me yet. I'd get the Shell, but in general, their prices are too high. (but their gas is wonderful)

Axel, I've always gotten Sunoco's 92. I've never tried their Ultra 94 before. There can't be a noticable difference can there? Don't buy regular gas for your Max by the way.

So, that's where you can get 91 gass. I've never seen anyplace that sells 91 before.

The 87 and 89 were clear performance degredations. The 91/92 could have been a combination of "slight" performance degredation and psychological performance degredation.
I've read that Sunoco Ultra 94 is very clean gas
Maybe that has something to do with it as well...then again, maybe it's not any cleaner and it's just more psychological stuff playing with my head

This thread is the down side of turning off the search function. We must endure this same thread almost on a weekly basis now, along with other functional newbies who actually respond to it. And we can't even lambaste the newbies because they don’t know any better.

Would someone please tell me why a car would get better mileage with premium over regular gas. I can certainly see how a few more hp can come from using higher octance - ability of the to be timing slightly more advanced (not retarded by the KS) = more hp. I keep hearing "the engine runs more efficiently", but if that is the case what does it mean? From what I have heard premium gas is no "cleaner" that regular gas. I've never had my Max ping on me and I run regular throughout the winter. Idle is silky smooth, no loss of power, etc. I run premium in the summer when I can take advantage of the extra few horses, but only notice a VERY slight difference between reg and premium by the seat of my pants. I was filling up today and the guy next to me was filling his new Honda box-thing (name escapes me know) with premium. Oil companies love people like that--a total waste of money.
