2002 Maxima SE - Good buy or not?

I havent really done a whole lot of looking around, besides on ebay at a 2002 Maxima.

It is a 2002 SE, with 17k miles, bose stereo, HIDs, but no sunroof.
They were asking $23,500 for it. I talked them down to $20,000. Do you guys think this is a good buy? It has very low mileage, wonder if thats a good thing or bad, hehe. Any help would be appreciated, cos I'd hate to buy it and later find out they ripped me one. Thanks guys

Re: 2002 Maxima SE - Good buy or not?

23.5K is definitely bad IMHO. To check car values, I suggest you look at www.kbb.org, www.edmunds.com, and www.nadaguides.com. To me, KBB is on the high side and Edmunds is on the low side.

Heck, according to KBB, my 2K2 GXE (under 11K miles) private party sale value is $18450!

BTW, ALL 2K2 and 2K3 US Maxes come w/HIDs. I'd also run a Carfax check on the car before buying, but personally, I wouldn't wanna buy a car off someone via Ebay motors.

Agreed. AND, you should be able to talk Nissan dealers into getting a NEW 2K3 SE for a similar price; mainly because of a) excess 2K3 inventory and b) the new 2K4s are on the lots.

Peace

If you want to travel I see 2002 SE's in the paper for $17k here regularly (Gainesville, FL) ... I can get a pic of the ad if need be.

2k2 Maxima SEs are selling at an average price of around $16k or less at car auctions. That's an average of cars with varying options of course. That's probably what the dealer is paying for the car either through trade or if they purchase at auction. Think about that profit margin when you negotiate.

Be sure to run a carfax report
I nearly bought a 2002 SE when I ran the report and found the car used to be a rental car.
I just bought a new 2003 for 21900 with .9 financing
Maxima RULES!

Be careful w/ those ads... look at the fine print ..'specially mid-city (I shopped there, ended up purchasing my '03 SE from Continental in Countryside, IL) .. it'll say something along the lines of "Dealer not responsible for mistakes in this ads.. all prices are subject to change w/o notification."

The only place that honored their awesome ad price in Chicagoland (i went to seven dealerships w/ ALL their ads .. all seven ads) was Countryside Nissan .. continental i mean. I got my base '03 w/ NO options but wheellocks and mats and mudguards for $21,999.00 w/ the $1000.00 back (before t.t.l.)

Best of luck!

About 95% of the 02's for sale were previous rentals so be careful. Most were previous Hertz or Enterprise cars cars brought at auctions if they are on the dealers lot, also Bose on an SE without a moonroof sounds fishy to me.

$17-18K is fair. Make sure its not a rental. They seem to be everywhere and have hurt resale value of the 2002s. And those ads for Maxs in Chicago- I called on a new one for $20,999 with Roof and leather-it was a GXE. I am buying an '02 SE 6 speed with roof tomorrow for $17s.
