Speaking of Ghetto Air Box

A recent thread reminded me of this. So, since I had 5 minutes to kill, I just did it to my car. Sounds pretty cool at WOT.

I'm surprised more people don't do this.

You did it in 5 minutes? What'd you use to cut it that quick?

I used a rotozip to cut the front lip off. If you don't have a rotozip, a hacksaw would work ok.

I have a bunch of GAB pics on my homepage. I should sell the directions, and the piece of pipe on e-bay for 5 bucks I'd make a million!! GAB is sweeping the nation!!

Check out this thread where 2k2_6spd gives more details on his GAB.
I still don't understand where the ooglie scoop is in this setup. Can you provide more info on that 2k2_6spd?

I cut off the bottom of the black tube that protrudes from the factory scoop, and attatched a 3" dryer vent tube from Home depot, and a gutter down spout thingie, that I screwed into the factory splash guard, this rams the air into the box.

Have any of you running a GAB also installed a K&N replacement air filter, or are you running the Nissan OEM?

I still havent finished the bottom of the intake. I had a resonator attached to the bottom of my stock intake, so now I've just got a hole to attach the tubing to. Quidpro - Most people use the K&N replacement, but it isnt necessary.

Here's another intake setup I'm considering. Check out Larry's post on page two. He uses a giant 9 inch K&N air filter at the end of the accordion piece, removes the baffle and use a crankcase filter.

Yeah, that's probably true. It just seems a little more pronounced around 75. Sounds cool too.

Do you still have the ooglie intake feeding more air in?

Yep and soon a cold air tube from the bottom where the stock resonator attached.

Where is your writeup on this? Hard to do? Feel any gains? Noisy? Do I ask a lot of questions?

Wouldn't that be the best way to do an ooglie cai. Can't you just remove the elbow from the bottom of the scoop that goes into the resonator, and then run a flexible hose to the from of the car?

After looking under the hood, I think most of the write-ups i've seen overcomplicate this mod. I think you could probably remove that elbow without taking anything apart. I also think that once you get the hose attached to the coupler, this is a ten minute swap from regular intake to ooglie cai.

Looks like a piece of cake. Might have to try it. I think the trickiest part is deciding where to attach the hose.

Yea its not tough at all. This is by far the easiest intake to install/make/customize.

It would also appear that this intake would be superior to an aftermarket CAI in a few ways as well. The only thing I can think of that this intake is deffiecient in, compared to PR and Injen, is the looks. I would think this intake would eliminate the low end loss of power that some aftermarket cai users complain about, and also the loss of top end that some aftermarket wai users complain about.

Since you are bypassing the res box, is there a noticable sound increase?

No, not really. Just pull out the insert, cut of the front lip and put it back in.

There is more to doing this in conjuction with an ooglie cai, but just the GAB is pretty much cutting off the front lip.

I guess it's how you define GAB. I was under the impression it included the ooglie and removing the baffle near the accordian piece, in addition to modifying the top of the airbox.

Ah, I smell what you're cookin'. Not sure how necessary removing the baffle is, but it couldn't hurt.

If I had to buy the piece again you cut, how much do you think that runs for?
