in my manual it says it doesnt "recommend" using cd-r's and recorded cds with my maximas cd player, i have the bose system installed..i tried playing cdr's and they play just fine, is there any long term damaging effect by playing these or am i safe?

 

They don't recommend it because *sometimes* you will encounter a CD-R that won't be able to play in your CD player. I've encountered only one of my CD-Rs like that...

No... no 'damage'... I accidentally put in a DVD into my player and all it did was skip skip skip and spit it out.

Same with the CDR if it won't play... skip skip skip, then it moves on to the next CD.

 

The reason why CD-R 's have bad publicity, is because, some cd's are paper thin. Using thicker, quality cd's, will almost gaurantee your cd-r will be read by your system.

 

The only issue I've ever had with CDRs is with a 80 minute disc. The BOSE system in my car (AE) seems to stop playing at 74 minutes no matter what. Nothing bad happens, it just skips back to the beginning of the disc before the end of the last track. Anyone else have this issue? Only one of my discs actually has music past the 74 minute point so I don't know if it's just that disc or what. Otherwise every else works.

 

Man....my Bose head unit works fine with CD-R's, but the changer in the trunk keeps skipping so badly with them. It ticks me off. I have heard that 74 minute CD's won't skip. I'll try one and see. But it's just terrible.

I recently did a technical presentation on Mod Chips for PS2's and Xbox's, and I came across something related to your question. On one of the websites in the FAQ's they had this:
Q: Will this modchip damage my laser optics ?
A : No, the chip has no effect whatsoever on the laser optics. The main issue to keep in mind is the quality of the disk media you are using (like DVD-Pressed, or DVD-R ); if they are of poor quality (low reflectivity or dirty) then the laser will have to work harder and will deteriorate sooner.

Even though this is for a PS2, and it is asking about DVD-R's, I would think that the same basic theory would apply in your situation. Thus, in my opinion, using cd-r's might damage the laser optics in your Bose cd player.

 

I have used nothing but CD-R in my Bose...for the past 2 years..granted it is an Altima...but it has never missed a beat.

 

I play CD-R in mine all the time. Nothing wrong with it. I've been playing em since the car was bought in 1999.

 

nothing but burnt cd's 4 me....I refuse to pay $15 or whatever they go for nowadays for a CD with 1 good song track....

 

Though I guess this is possible, it doesn't make much sense to me. In order for laser to "work harder" it would have to dynamically adjust it's light output for different media. I am not aware of any system that does this. The laser puts out a "static" beam and reads what it can (as far as I'm aware anyway.) If the media is poor quality then it would have issues with reflection, which could consitute higher error rates and slower recovery (skipping). Maybe its just a PS2 thing. Any engineers out there that know for sure?

I've used CD-Rs in all my CD players for ~4 years now without a problem. I don't think you should be worried.

Dude...I still have a 4X burner. Is that slow enough? Apparently it isn't because my CD's are still skipping in the changer!

LIKE I WROTE EARLIER, try a better brand of cd's that are thicker and heavier. Trust em on this.

 

I agree and I can conferm this too, I tried burning a song on a "AT&T 80min CD-R" that was on promotion for full purchase rebate at BestBuy, and when I burn music and put it in my Bose system it didn't ready very well, skips, and sometimes won't even read the track.

Then I use the same burner and same burn speed (8x) on a "Sony CD-R", Wow the differents its like night and day!

So YES, if you are going to pop CD-R's in your Maxima, USE ONLY GOOD QUALITY ONE'S. Aka Name Brands.

 

I have hundreds of blanks that I buy when Staples or best buy offer them for free with rebates...Never had a problem with any of them

I ONLY use Sony CD-R's and my 4X burner. Still having skip problems in the changer.

As for antiques on EBAY. I am going to wait a while until 10,000X burners come out and then my 4X will be worth major $$$.

 

The only thing I think could cause you problems is if you put lables on the CDs. If it comes loose in a changer I can imagine all sorts of ugly things happening to the laser pickup and changer mechanisms.

 

I haven't had any problems with CD-Rs in my 2K1 bose system... I do however, encounter a weird problem on badly scratched CDs - instead of skipping (i've never been able to make it skip), I can 'hear' the scratches in the song... it's like a really fast beat or ticking in the background... VERY annoying, but better than skipping/being uplayable I suppose...

 

I have a 2k3 with the BOSE system and have had no problems playing any burned CDs. I burn mine at 24x using an HP high-speed burner so burning speed can't be the problem. I only use name brand CD-Rs like Sony or Memorex, so maybe that's the difference.

 

oh yeah - forgot to mention I burn mine at either 32x or 48x, depending on which CD-Rs I have handy...

 

"Brand" gives little indication of the quality of the CD-R, since there are only a dozen or so manufacturers of the media.

Don't burn at max speed unless you have a good burner.


I always knock my burn rate down to the next setting when burning.. ie. 12x burn -> 10x burn and don't have any trouble at all...

Labels are EVIL. CDRs are not the same quality as a pressed CD, which is why some older 1st generation CD players can't read them all the time... The big round label makes things harder to get a good read on the disc because it throws the balance of the CD off... And the player which is already at its limits of reading the burnt CD can't compensate for the sqewed data its now getting so it sounds like it skips...

Scratchs do more damage to a CDR, and with really cheap CDRs, the metal film will start to "chip" around the edges with regualr use & abuse...

 

Personal experience in the 2k with Bose: Any CD-R I have used burnt on any speed from my old 10x dinosaur to the discs copied this weekend on the new 52x burner work in the Max. Good luck!

 

My Bose player would, from time to time, sound like crap out of the left channel (front and back). I thought my player was going bad. Then I noticed it was always on my burned copy of Matchbox Twenty, and it was always toward the end of the CD when it acted up. The only cure was to make the changer go to another CD, then switch back to the MB20 cd. It doesn't always scew up when I play this CD, but when it does screw up, this is the CD it's playing. I'm still watching it to make sure it doesn't mess up on any others, but I think my burned CD is messing with the player.

 

then how much u think i can get for my original 2x8 CDR that don't even rewrite but just record at 2x?

I never listen to the radio and all the cd's I listen to are CD-R's. Very rarely will I use an original CD.

 

With the two 12" sub's it sounds nice.
