Turning off the "Service Engine Soon" light

Turning off the "Service Engine Soon" light
I was driving last week in my 2000 SE and I was freaked out by the Service Engine Soon light which came on. After getting home and reading the own'er's manual, It could be caused by the gas cap not being on tight. That was exactly the problem, but a week later I'm stuck with that stupid light on! Is there any way of turning the light off myself rather than going to the mean people at the dealership and paying mucho $$$?
Thanks

I had the light come on twice. Both times for oxygen sensor. I asked around and no one knew of a way to do it. I ended up going to the dealership to do it. It took them 2 minutes and they charged me the one hour min which was $68!!! There has to be away but I didnt want to mess anything up. From what I've heard it does not cause any problems if you just leave it alone. But like you I didnt want it on.

I did the same thing, but mine went away after I filled the tank and tightened it. But I know Autozone might help you identify y it is staying on.

I had the same problem two weeks ago.Two ways you can go;
1-take off the negative battery wire for 30 minutes, if it returns after recoonecting the terminal there is a problem. Most times its intermittent or something minor and it shouldn't come back on, if it returns see #2 below
2-buy an OBD II code reader at www.toolsource.com for $149 delivered. The code can be read at www.actron.com for free
Good luck!

Hey crow76, buy yourself a Innova 3100 it's an OBDII code reader, you'll be able to erase the code within a minute, I did it a bout 2 weeks ago and the code never came back on, I bought the reader at Canadian Tire for 287$ cdn which is around 149$ US.
Good luck

The real calculation is the following: 249$ CDN + taxes=287$ ( 249/1.58=157.59 US ) + taxes, that's about 1$ close.

There are still state taxes in the US. Its $1 CAD=.68 US, therefore $249x.68= $169 US. Close enough.

30 minutes is too long. Only a few minutes is required.

Obviously, too many people have extra money to spend on a code reader. Dude, go to Autozone. They can read the error code and tell you what it means. They can also reset the SES light, if it comes back on, then troubleshoot the code. But Autozone does it all for free.
