New plugs = SES light?..Got the code!!!

Put new NGK plugs in yesterday. Today the SES light turns on, any relation? There is no misfire, coil packs are on tight, runs very strong.

Any ideas?

Get a code pulled from Autozone for free and post it up on here. Then we can help you.

The code is P0138 (Circuit High Volts Bank 1 + 2)?

What is this?

P0138 = rear heated O2 sensor (fed spec emissions)... indicates the sensor is not reaching full voltage... I would just reset the thing and see if it comes back... this sensor only checks for the presence of a main cat and does not control A/F ratios as long as your front sensors are still working.

Well, it could be just a bad O2 sensor... so that might have to be replaced... oh and I misread the listing previously... the code is for cali spec emissions... it is the right O2 sensor after the pre-cat in the y-pipe... not the main cat. Either way though, it only checks for the presence of the pre-cat...

Yeah, you shouldn't have to re-gap new plugs.

Just sayin this but platinums don't require gapping.

Good question! Maybe there is a fundamental confusion of the use of the term 'gapping'. Some may consider it only when you actually change the gap on the plug. Others may use the term to cover the use of a gapping tool to double check the gap even if no actual change is made. I fall into the latter category.

The plugs are copper and they were VERY close to stock gap. I don't think any of them needed much adjustment. I assume them being copper I could have gone a little larger on the gap as well but didn't.

Yes, check even when new and EVEN when they say pre-gapped. Doesn't take much of a tap to move them around...

Couldn't hurt, right?

I just dont understand why anybody would NOT check this? It takes less than 10 seconds to check a plug. So why risk an improper gapped plug and take the "box's" word that its correct?

I guess I am more **** retentive than most....or are most not **** retentive enough?

I was told by an R&S service person that the only plugs that came pre-gapped where the bosch plugs. But anyhow, you should always check the gap.
