The Best Sounding and Most HP Gain Intakes

I know this thread as prob been hit more than anyone here cause it is the first thing people put on there cars but i was wondering which intake is the best sounding and has the most hp gain. Ive heard rumours that there was a new intake out now for the maxima with a hp gain of 15 hp

I don't have the link search i can't search for it either, but if you read the last page of the FAQ, there is a link to a 'definitive' intake threat where a couple were dyno-tested in the same car under similar conditions.

As for the new intake, maybe you're referring to the Firm Fabrications one? I am not sure .. but that's the one I am getting.

The Frankencer and Firm Fabrications will give you the most power from an aftermarket intake, but I really feel that the best intake is the modified stock intake, or ghetto air box.

I've got the Stillen Hi-Flow intake and love it....sounds amazing when you stomp on the pedal....I think I scared some people when I was driving it yesterday...

I'm a fan of the injen...it seems to give more low end grunt and sounds really nice when you step on it, quiet when you don't.

I'd like to get an intake for my Maxima too, but here's my dilemma:

The car is leased so I don't want to make any permanent modifications. I also don't want to spend a lot because I'll be giving the car back in 3 yrs. I'd like to stick to about $150 if that's possible.

I was planning on getting a K&N panel filter, but I have a feeling I won't be satisfied. My previous car was a 96 T-bird with a CAI, cat-back exhaust and underdrive pulleys. It wasn't the fastest in the world, but at least people knew it wasn't stock by the sound of it.

Last but not least, I don't want to deal with any MAF problems. How's the Frankencar intake with this issue? It seems to be right on par with what I want to pay. They offer the K&N and Apexi filters - which one is better? I already have all the cleaning stuff for the K&N (also used on my motorcycle).

Thanks in advance......

I tested a K&N drop-in, a WAI, and a CAI. The WAI won in overall HP and Torque.

As for sound, the WAI is the loudest at WOT, but the CAI is deeper under normal conditions. The sound will also vary based upon the exhaust setup that is in the car, so it'll be difficult (at best) to compare the sounds because not very many people have recorded the sounds of all the intakes on the same exhaust setup.

To verify if you'll have MAF issues, read this thread:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=198305

Make sure you have the update before using an intake. And make sure you don't have a MAF with the following part numbers: 22680-6N200, 22680-6N201. If you do, go get the update before installing the intake.

I put down 224hp with just a Franken Intake. I had a Franken since last Feb. I put in the Injen and I liked it a lot, but the car just seemed to not climb the RPMs as well. So I put the Franken back in and it was very noticable, even the woman made a comment right away. For the price, I am happy with the Franken.

Oh yeah, the sound is unbeatable.

Cool - thanks for the info. Is this part number visable without disassembling anything?

Another concern is highway cruising speed - is there any noticable difference in sound there? I don't want it droning or anything. I'd have to assume it wouldn't, but we all know what happens when you assume things....

It seems like most any intake is only going to make a noticable difference if you mash the gas but I don't want to find out after the purchase/install.

Thanks again.............

you can see the # very easily once the stock box is removed.

its on the front side of the MAF tube

No Problem.

Trust me, I was suprised too, but if you look at the math, it looks like I got one of the "true" 255hp maximas. Maybe it was just a good day for the guy that built my motor, he gave me an extra kick in there.

The first two runs I took the Filter OFF because I thought it would pull 1 or 2 HP. As you can see I actually gained 7hp from the filter being on with Run#3

Can you also post one that has the HP/Torque listed on it, and base it off of RPMs (instead of speed). And if you really wouldn't mind, can you email me the dynorun.00* files. I'm trying to test/tune the correct air/fuel ratios, and I'd like to document your HP/Torque/Air-Fuel numbers at a good number of intervals. I've already documented most of mine, but would appreciate yours too, since you are posting numbers higher than me.

And mine are low because of the Y/B/Cat setup and mis-managed fuel. I wish the dyno shop would hurry up and get me some free time.

I saw on the altimas.net that there is a new intake mod that uses the stock airbox. I forget the name of company that is developing it, it replaces the accordian section of intake tubing near the throttle body and connects to the MAF section. I is a smooth midpipe looking piece. They are allready sell these for some Lexus models. They claim 15hp

maybe they meant to say, we can make it sound like you gained 15hp.
