which oil filter

I have a 2k3 se w/2910 miles and it's time for it's 1st oil change. I'm new here and have read about waiting until 10k to go synth, but I'm having a prob w/the oil filter. I'm not sure which one to get - no mention in the owners manual. When I went to the auto parts store, they had 2 different filters for 2k2 and 2k3. Is this right? I usually use Fram, but wont after what I've already read. I guess I am interested in an oem or Mobil 1 but I need a part # ,advice or directions to a good oil/oil filter link.

First, congrats on the purchase! I have a 2k3 SE with under 200 miles on it right now...I'm loving it.

What have you read about Fram that makes you want to change? I'm planning on doing a change at about 500-1000 miles so I've been thinking about the same thing. I bought a K&N performance oil filter last week that I plan to use at least until I research it a little better. Who knows...I might just stick with K&N...except they are a little pricey ($9.99).

Mobil 1, K&N or Amsoil are the best. The Mobil 1 and the K&N are both made by Champion Labs and are a tad bit better than the Amsoil, but all 3 are fantastic.

Fram filters are the absolute worst oil filters made.

No, not really. You forgot about those oil filters they put on at Jiffy Lubes and other quick oil change centers. Those crappy things must not cost over 30 cents a piece.

Speaking of quick oil change centers, I've got a great story about Wal-Mart that you guys will enjoy. My friend took his 93 Nissan Maxima SE there to get his oil changed. His wife was actually driving the car at the time. She picked up the car after it was done and drove it about 5 miles to another grocery store. She then drove it home. She was entering a freeway on ramp when she noticed the oil light come on! This is where I would have immediately turned off the engine. She kept going! It's anyones guess what kind of noises she started hearing but after ANOTHER few miles down the road she decided she'd better pull over.

They later found the oil filter laying at the entrance to the on ramp 3 or 4 miles back! This all happened on a hot summer day and she had the air conditioner on. My friend went back to Wal-Mart and had some words with the manager. The manager reluctantly agreed to pay for any damages. He took the car to his local reputable mechanic who upon hearing the story told him the engine was trashed, but he'd look at it anyway. The mechanic filled the engine with oil and put another oil filter on (this time remembering to tighten it unlike Wal-Mart) and started it up. To his surprise the engine ran perfectly with no strange noises! He ran a compression test and it came back fine.

They kept the car another year before they sold it and it ran perfectly the whole time. My friend said he never noticed a decrease in power or gas mileage either. If this isn't a testament to how strong these engines are, I don't know what is!

Good point. Fram is still evil though.

Have you considered sticking with the stock Nissan filter?
From what I've read here on the .Org they are great filters and are used by many members including myself. If the search function were available you could download a ton of info on this subject. Too bad.
In addition, you can buy them at a lower cost than the aftermarket products. If you change your oil/filter every 3-4k, you won't notice any difference in engine longevity.
Good Luck!!!

I have been running Mobil-1 oil full synthetic oil with OEM filters since I had my car... I have ran this set up with a Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Nissan SE-R, Honda hatch, Nissan altima,,,, and an Integra.... don't waste your money on aftermarket or even the mobil-1 synthetic oil filter... it's a waste of money... go with the OEM filter... its the best for the car...

STP 6941. Best bang for the buck, by far.

Someone told me to buy the SuperTech filters they sell at Walmart. I bought one for my truck. They are made my Champion Labs as well and it says they have a 99% efficiency. The best part is that they're only a few bucks each.
I also used to buy Fram all the time, but will never do it again because of what I've heard about them.

Fram is a POS... plenty of people have told me that (mechanics in general). Stick with OEM...

just got my oil sample back from blackstone labs this week.

3600 miles of hard driving, in the city, pushing lights, merging on freeways, powershifting... you get the idea.

they said my oil looks cleaner than most oils would at 5000-6000 miles. 0 to very little of harmful metals, waaay below the averages.

K&N filters. Amsoil 5w30. almost 65k on my car.

i found my magic combo!

The Mobil 1 filters are about $10 at most stores, or twice as much as the Nissan one's.
